Anything to do on weekends other than parties or sports?

My son is not interested in sports at all, and prefers a small, low key party rather than a louder party or dance. Are there enough other things to do at Williams on the weekend such as theater, classical music, opera, art films? Does anyone know how Williams would compare in this regard to other LACs? Thanks for your input.

I’m only a senior who applied for admission this year, but I’m exactly the same way. I am extremely involved in theatre (possibly will be double majoring in it), and from what I have read, theatre and the arts in general are really active on campus. I’m not sure how it compares to other LACs. Looking at this Tumblr - http://arts-at-williams.■■■■■■■■■■/</a> - the arts community seems to be really vibrant, and they also have the art gallery on campus, admission for which I believe is free for all students. Hope this helps a bit!

My impression from my son’s time on campus was that hanging out with friends was the number one pass time on weekends. There are large loud parties which students may attend or avoid. There are tons of college sponsored high (and medium) brow cultural events – concerts, plays, movies, talks, dance performances, planetarium shows, museum openings. Impromptu low-skill activities like broom ball or sledding or mountain hikes.

I think the first year entry system really helps establish an instantaneous social group. People to go to dinner with, to watch TV with. Every one attends each other’s sports events and cultural performances. One of the Junior Advisers usually has a car for nearby outings like a visit to MassMoca or dinner out of town. Once or twice a semester the college organizes trips to Boston, New York or Montreal.

Most small LACs provide a smorgasbord of activities on weekends. Williams doesn’t have a city environment to draw on but makes up for it with a broad range of music, theater and visual art offerings.

Thanks LAMuniv and momrath. I do feel reassured that Williams would be a good fit for my son.
