So I have to take a Fine Art for graduation. I'm thinking of AP Art History (because I truly do NOT want to take a Drawing/Painting course... shudders and history sounds interesting). I've heard the teacher at my school is a sadist and loves giving TONS of homework. So I'm thinking FLVS might be better...anyone know how it is there? A lot of work?

i hate art history so much. i thought it was going to be interesting at the beginning of the year, but it turned out to be tons of mindless worksheets, notecards, and essays (but honestly you can bs your essays most of the time). all you learn are the different art periods, styles of artists, and remembering names, dates, locations, patrons, mediums, etc of different works of art; alot of pointless memorization.

if i had another chance then i wouldnt have taken it just for the extra GPA boost because it really is a waste of time. although i didnt take the course on FLVS, i imagine that you still have to learn the same stuff and go through that huge Gardner's Art History textbook. i would only take it if you truly have an interest in the subject and alot of extra time. good luck

The workload isn't too heavy but it is pretty boring. There is alot of memorization and because it is so easy to cheat, it makes the class even harder to learn something from. My teacher was fairly good but she graded the essays I wrote very easily imo and the final exam was like a replay of the multiple choice quizzes I took throughout the course. I dont feel prepared for the AP test at all, but then again I finished the course two months ago and I haven't reviewed since.

I too agree that they grade the essays too easily. It seems that every piece of written material I turn in, it gets the automatic maximum amount of points. The multiple choice questions become the only objective feedback on your work. The reason for this, I believe, is that these FLVS teachers have an incredible amount of students. My teacher for AP Macroeconomics said she has over 150 students - that's why you never get any objective feedback on the numerous written assignments. Unlike AP Art History, the multiple choice questions for AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics are very conceptual and require a good bit of analytical skills, so one cannot just search the answer. The temptation to cheat is basically eliminated, fortunately, otherwise I wouldn't get anything from the course. It's a shame that we don't receive any real feedback on the essays and other written material, but that AP classes I have taken on FLVS (and I am not a Florida resident) have been fairly impressive relative to other online service providers.

As long as you do your part in studying, I think you'll do fine. Then again, while some parts are incredibly interesting, others are dead boring. I got a satisfying 4 considering I didn't write much for two short essays, and I completely made up the last long essay. :)

I have used University of North Carolina-Greensboro iSchool, Oklahoma State University German Online, and NCVPS (North Carolina Virtual Public School). The last two providers are very good, although I dislike UNCG iSchool because of the easiness of their online college courses. These are examples of various services my high school allows me to use, so I just get credit through my high school.
