AP CHEM... questions about the new format!

Hey guys,
I recently purchased the AP CHEM 2015 EDITION PR
Took the diagnostic got 55% (33/60 correct. 27 WRONG…mostly acid-base…forgot all about it) and asked my teacher to grade my FRQ… scored 38/46… didn’t do so well on one of the long one.

I have load of questions right now
tried to contact my teacher but it seems like he is busy… its weekend- he needs a break
Anyways,

I have 98% in AP CHEM first semester overall, 97% right now.
but apparently I forgot most of the first semester stuff… I’m confident with chemistry… just need some review… have been occupied with working, sat, other APs.

Q1. 55% on MC, 38/46 on FRQ… what is the score?
Q2. What is the cut off for a 5 (I HAVE TO GET A FIVE ON CHEM…*I hate ap english… and other craps. gotta have a 5 to confirm myself that pursuing CHEM major is a right choice)
Q3. My review book says 90 mins for section II, college board says 105 mins… and other source says something less… how long do we have???

  1. probably a 5, but I would question if your teacher were following the FRQ grading rubric or being generous, because there is a big disparity between your MC and FRQ scores.
  2. Only the College Board knows for sure since they have not released a new exam, but probably somewhere around 65-67%.
  3. When in doubt, go with the college board. It's 105 minutes for the FRQ; they just recently announced this change. There were many complaints last year that 90 minutes was insufficient time for the FRQ, so I guess their response was to extend the time instead of eliminate a question.

Noooooo. Last year’s 5 cutoff score was around 75%, and my ap chem advisor hypothesized that this year it’ll be closer to 80%. I’m freaking out-- it’s DEFINITELY not lower than 70%. Also, your grade in ap chem can hardly be representative of the ap test; i know kids who got A’s in ap chem and still got 4’s. It depends on your teacher, really.

Last year for the FRQ, 31 out of 46 was needed for a 5, which is 67%. The MC cutoff has not been made publicly available, so any estimates, including mine, are conjecture.

Skieurope, do you predict that the curve will be more rough this year because that 2014 FRQ score (31/46 for a 5) was with 90 minutes rather than 105?

@rhubarbb Probably not. It seems for most tests, a 5 hovers somewhere around 65%.
