AP chem

Well I know there is plenty of forums on AP chem but they're all pretty old, I was wondering if you think It's recommended to take AP chem while taking 4 other APs which would be Euro, Lang, World, APES? And I have no prior knowledge to Chem but I plan on studying it all summer. Is it as hard as everyone says? Worth taking? A fun class??

Hmmm,

It’s not impossible, but it’ll be really difficult. What grade are you in? If you’re not a senior, could you possibly hold it off because that’s a lot of work. I don’t know about other students, but when students in my school take AP chemistry, it’s something that they’re truly interested in. I’m in it now, and it’s such a fun class. However it won’t be a fun class if you’re not interested in it. This class isn’t a walk in the park, I had a hard time with it and had to study regularly. Personally, I wouldn’t take with four other AP classes, pace yourself. If you are that dedicated and want to study all summer, go ahead.

It absolutely varies from school to school. I would ask kids from your school who took it. However, regarding the course material, I absolutely love it. It depends on what your interests are. For a science person (which I am not), it would be perfect. Yet, depending on how it is taught, it can be very hospitable to people who do well in science, yet don’t particularly like it.

Hello! I’m also taking AP Chem next year here… and I have heard that it is EXTREMELY difficult. SO unless you are very motivated and passionate about science (i.e. you want to be a chemist or engineer), than I don’t recommend taking it. Additionally, take classes that you enjoy, not just for the AP credit.

Thank you so much for your help, I’m still not sure if I should take it lol It’s a huge toss up but, I’m leaning toward taking it my senior year since everyone keeps telling me it’s a lot of focus especially since I have no background knowledge just from physics in 8th grade if it counts lol. and I will be a Sophomore next year.

Yea I’m not really a STEM person, but I do like learning science basics.

The AP chem curriculum is totally new next year so there won’t be too much study materials. My ap chem teacher said it’s less math based now.

So with less math, would it be easier??

^

Not necessarily, the concepts are pretty difficult in AP chemistry. The math in AP chemistry isn’t what makes the course difficult, the concepts trip up the students the most. Most of AP chemistry material requires the student to utilize a concept, then use math/questions to solve a problem. The hardest unit for me in AP chem was the chemical kinetics unit, it was hard trying to mix concept and the equations together.

My teacher said the questions were getting harder. She said that now instead of a multiple choice question on one topic, it combines two or three topics per question, making it pretty complicated.

For the AP test, though, it doesn’t matter if it gets harder or easier, there’s still going to be a similar %of fives and fours etc.
