So I’m taking AP chem rn in high school and I really want to become OB & GYN but I don’t like chem and want to drop it. Do I really need chemistry for my field? Should I drop it or not? Also one more thing is psychology major okay for my field or do I need to take bio or chem?
Whatever you do in HS has nothing to do with your desire to be OB/GYN. You should be concentrate on the requirements of your UG and once you get there work hard to be a premed so you can be admitted to a med school.
Are you in high school or college?
To have a shot at med school, as a high school student, you need to take bio honors, Chem honors, physics at any level (regular, honors, AP1), plus preferably AP Chem and perhaps AP bio. Having As in all of those is a good benchmark.
If you’re in college, yes chemistry is THE key class for a premed and you’ll have 5 classes of it, all weedout.
AP Chem will prepare you well for first semester of undergrad chem, in my opinion. I would stick with it.
To be an OBGYN, you need to go to medical school after completing your bachelors degree. People in undergrad who aspire to go to med school are called “pre-meds”. Pre-med is NOT a major. You can major in anything to go to medical school (including psych) as long as you have the classes required by med schools in addition to your major requirements. Typically this includes 2 semesters of gen chem + lab, 2 semesters of bio + lab, 2 semesters of physics + lab, 2 semester of ochem + lab, calc, stats, english and perhaps biochem, genetics, psych, A&P, depending on the school. Many premed students choose to major in some kind of life science degree (i.e. bio, molecular bio, microbio, biochem, genetics, etc) as the classes mentioned above are required by these majors.
A word of caution: Whatever major you chose, make sure it is something that you can use to find a good job after undergrad if you decide to not go to medical school (or get weeded out). I know many people who started undergrad as premeds and changed their minds or weren’t qualified for med school. My understanding is that most psych jobs require an advanced degree of some sort (MS, Ph.D., Psy.D., etc) and that these postbac degree programs can be rather expensive and highly competitive. However, as pscyh is not my field, I am not the best person to dispense for or against this major.
