Ok senior year is coming up pretty soon and I'm trying to decide between Ap Chem and Ap Physics C. The last time I took chem was in honors chem for freshmen year and I took AP Physics B in 10th grade (got a 5). I want to go into mechanical engineering at the moment (aspirations may change), so what class should i take? I know the prevalent view may be to take AP Physics C since I want to go into MechE, but I know many colleges require you to take Chem in freshmen year. I'm not to keen on going into college after only taking freshman year chemistry. On the other hand, AP Physics C paired along with AP Calc BC could prove very valuable for MechE. What are your thoughts? AP Physics C to prepare me more for potential future MechE or AP Chem to prepare myself for required chem courses in college? Thanks.

take both 10char

I said OR. It’s my senior year and I’m not gonna take both courses.

take both. i’m a junior, i’m doing it, it’s not a tough courseload.

but in your case, i guess i’d just say go with AP Phys because it pertains so much to your major. you’ll pretty much relearn what you would have learned in ap chem in your freshman year of college…also, if you wanted to go further with chemistry in college and you took ap chem, you would have to take Organic Chemistry, which is probably one of most abominable classes known to college students.

tl;dr: Take both if possible. If not, take Phys

take physics C, because ap chem is useless at most good schools, but some of them give cred 4 ap phs C

First, disclaimer…I’m the parent of a student who is starting his first year as a aero/mech engr. I also mentor hs kids going into STEM majors. Take AP Chem. You will want the credit and never look back. Why bother taking it in college? It will be required for ALL engr majors Unlike a biochem major it is unlikely you will build on the Chem and take further classes in college. You are better off taking Physics in college where you will be building on these principals for your major. My son had AP credit for both Chem and Physics going into college. He will gladly take the Chem credit (hated the class), but is retaking Physics even with the credit. There is no way a hs Physics class will give you a solid foundation for a mech engr major. The students that didn’t pass the AP Chem test (a 4 is required at most selective Us) or didn’t take it are hating their first semester schedule! You will be required to take the LAB at most universities even with credit, however some allow you to present your lab notebooks for review. If they are cleared you are exempt from the lab, so keep those lab notebooks and check with your U to see if this is a possibility.

thanks. more please!

bump…

bump…

I would take AP Physics B. I am in a situation kind of like yours, and taking the class that fits your major is best.

Chem. don’t be silly

Correction, AP Physics C. Woopes

I 'll second Blueiguana’s comments. I am also a parent and an electrical engineer. Take AP Chemistry.

AP Chem is my thought for the reasons already stated.
