AP Chemistry Self-Study

I am sure there are individuals at CC who could easly comment and say that it is possible (self-study for the AP Chemistry exam) but I was wondering if it is a pratical option considering my senior year schedule:

2- Research
3- AP Computer Science*
4- AP Chemistry*
5- AP Chemisty*
6- AP Calculus BC
7- AP Calculus BC
8- AP Economics
9- AP Literature
10- AP Physics B
11- AP Physics B

The stars* denote that I am unsure of what to do during these periods. What I would like to atleast do is to take Physics C Mechanics and Elec/Mag and Number Theory (university-level mathematics, past AP) out of school because these classes arent offered in school. I would use the time that would normally be allocated (which includes 40 minutes per period and time spent doing homework/studying) toward the stared* classes and use it for studying Physics C and Number Theory instead. Each class has around 5 - 10 hours of work each and maybe 3 hrs total class time. Although I would rather study Phyiscs C and Number Theory, I would also like to learn chemistry on a more advanced level (I have already completed honor chemistry), hence my hope to self - study AP Chemsitry. I estimating that with the time saved (time for AP* periods - time of class out of school) I could squeeze it in.

If anyone has taken chemistry or better yet self-studied the course may you please give specific recommendations in reference to exemplary study techniques, textbooks, and reviewbooks. Thank you for your help in advance !

I got a 5. Most of the stuff I did on my own (even though I was in a class). The teacher was good but new, so she wasn't super motivated (expecially since we had some lazy kids in our class...) So, my friend and I made study guides for almost all the chapters in Zumdahl. D-load them, study them and use them next year, and you will get a 4 guaranteed.

i self studied ap chem a couple years ago, while concurrently being in honors chem. all i did was read chapters 1-17 in zumdahl's book and used the ARCO prep book. I started in october. got a 5 on the test. good luck.

bump ... anymore suggestions !?

I "self-studied" AP Chem. However, because I happened to be addicted to Pokemon, yes, that stupid game, for the weeks before that test, all my prep for AP Chem consisted of my studying for the SAT II Chemistry. Yet I still got a 4. I probably would have gotten a 5 if I had enough self-control to study acids+bases but I was too lazy too at that point.

Self-studying APs requires considerable self-discipline. However, it is entirely doable because it's the same stuff taught to so many college freshman who aren't geniuses.

is the Cliffs book sufficient enough for the AP Test? Or better yet, the SAT II? I have the Kaplan book but it is really confusing.

i would suggest the book 5 steps to a 5 for chemistry. It presents some concepts better than most textbooks that i have seen.

I got a 5 by the way.

Hahaha. . .when I first saw your schedule, I thought you had like 10 AP classes, so I was like. . .OMG, no way can you study Chem by yourself. . .but yeah, I think Chem is a very doable subject, since it is concept based. . .you should see if you can get some help on chem labs though, because there is always a lab question on the exam

Do not use the sat 2 book...it will not get you where you need to be.

For the AP test, I would recommend the PR book. My school bought us copies of that book and it was very useful. Also, try to get your hands on some old AP tests - the FRQ's are avaliable on APCentral, but you'll have to find a teacher with old MC tests.

Princeton Review - most importantly, the chapter review questions.

Princeton Review seems to be a good choice. I used Barron's, and it had way too much information. I did get a 4, though, so I shouldn't be too mad.

Hey Crypto 86 - Can you place a better link for those study guides that you made? Thanks
