How do the two programs compare?

IB chem SL isn't as in depth as AP chem. If you want to go and take chem classes in college as a chem major or something, there will be a lot of info you won't know because you didn't cover as much as you would in AP chem. If you take IB chem SL and then AP chem after, AP chem wouldn't be too hard because some of the material is very similar. If you're a rising junior (which I'm assuming you are) I would take IB chem SL then AP chem senior year. If you're a rising senior, I would take AP chem.

i am also a rising junior taking "IB Chemistry 1 HL"- the course is split up into 2 years- should i take the AP Chem exam next year or wait until I'm a senior? please note that next yr would be my second year in a row taking chemistry (i took honors chem this yr)

I would say no because the 1st year of Chem HL is Chem SL (at least at my school) and if you read my first post you'd see that AP chem is a lot more indepth. However, you could self study AP chem by studying the extra material in AP. I would recommend you taking the AP test senior year after you have all of IB chem done with.

I agree with swim2daend. I took Chem HL, and we were also able to take the AP test. They correlated pretty well. There were a few very small things we had to cover as extra for AP, but there was more stuff (organic, options, etc) that was only IB HL. Unfortunately, my school does HL Chem as a two-period class in order to facilitate labs, instead of over two years, so I really don't have any experience of having only learned SL. But just from how people felt about the AP this year, I think it would be extremely challenging if one did not know the HL material.

is ap chemistry harder than ib hl chemistry

AP chemistry is more rigorous than IB chemistry SL; AP chemistry will gain college credit in most colleges, while IB chem SL will most likely not gain any credit at a college.
