How do these courses compare? Which is harder? Can an IB Chemistry SL student reasonably expect to get a good grade on the AP test without extra study?

uman:

I took both courses and exams in high school (AP Chem in 2001-2002, and IB Chem SL 2002-2003). The courses are pretty different. If you're an IB Chem student, you will have to study for AP Chem, and vice versa.

I'd argue that AP Chem is a bit harder than IB Chem, but that's just my opinion. AP Chem is narrower in scope but more involved in depth - IB Chem covers more topics like basic organic chemistry, but it doesn't get into a lot of detail.

IB Chem SL is much easier than AP...theres not much depth and problem solving in IB SL

Well, I took Chem HL and the AP, and they were pretty comparable...so I would imagine that it would be difficult to do well on the AP with just SL.

IB chem SL is definitely a lot easier than AP chem. However, IB chem HL and AP chem are pretty equal in terms of difficulty; in fact, in our school we have IB chem SL, which is a prerequisite for a combined IBHL/AP chem class. (The slight variation in topics are compensated for through an exam-specific summer assignment.)
