Hey:)
I thinking about taking these tests, but I am a esl student.
That means I was really from Taiwan.
Even thought I get a perfect scores, colleges will know I am a Chinese speaker.
But if I don't take it, how can I prove my Chinese to college?
Thank you for helping!
P.s. I am also taking French 1 now.
Should I just take French as my foreign language?

Just go ahead and take the AP Chinese test. I’m Taiwanese too, therefore I can guarantee you that the test stops at grade 6 in terms of difficulty. But get hold of a prep book and familiarize yourself with the format beforehand, because the test is taken entirely via computer. College Board provides both pinyin and zuyin functions for the typed responses, but the keyboards on the test center may not have the symbols marked on it :). As for the speaking portion, mention plenty of customs and tradition, and you’ll be fine.

But I also heavily recommend taking French

If you’re not too tight on money, I’d go for AP Chinese test regardless. It won’t hurt you if it doesn’t help you!

French wise, I agree with AndesGiant14. It would really help to appeal trilingual to colleges as opposed to bilingual with your native language + English. :)

Thank you for the advices
They are REALLY helpful.
And now I know why everyone suggests me to ask the people on college confidential !!!

I’m in the same position as you, esther2015! Thanks for the advice, I’m going to go ahead and take the AP Chinese test even though I’m chinese!

This thread really helped me to take the AP chinese. i thought the essay portion was handwritten, but then I saw that it was all taken via computer. So I was like YESS! Thanks for creating this thread!

I am taking the AP chinese nexy year,
so tell me how’s the test if anyone of you took it?
thanks;)

esther2015, I took it 2 years ago when I was a freshman. It was pretty easy. Just remember to bring an earphone with you.

Earphone? Do I have to bring my own CD player?
Thanks

You should take the AP Chinese test as that would bring you closer or to a higher level of AP scholar. It may not be counted as a foreign language in your college application though. For that, you should keep on your French classes. For subject test, it would be less useful. Top schools like Harvard would not consider any native foreign language as 1 of the required 2 SAT2 scores. If you get a 5 in AP Chinese, I really don’t see any advantage of taking SAT2 Chinese as the schools would consider additional SAT2 just like AP test scores in admission and would not give you credit for enrollment.

AP test are generally harder than the SAT subject tests. But if you are a native speaker, then you should do fairly well on both.

A thing to note, while SAT subject tests for chinese is all multiple choice, AP has you to speak 2minute presentation, write a few sentences, and then the rest is kind of the same as SAT. So if you like, take both!

Thanks for the great advices, guys;)
I will be taking both since I will also be taking other subjects too.
But the hard part is to find a CD player now.

i took the sat Chinese and I got perfect score, but the percentile is only 64.
does that mea I should not sent it?
