SAT Chinese...is it worth it?

Hey guys! So I have a question about taking SAT II Chinese. So I have already taken all my SAT's and one of my subject tests was French which I got a 780 on. I'm Chinese so I have heard a lot about taking SAT Chinese, getting an 800, and it not mattering much at all. But I heard somewhere that maybe taking Chinese as an extra SAT will show adcoms that you know your own language. If I take it, this will be my fourth subj. test.

Will this be worth it? Or would I just be wasting my time and adcoms really don't care. Thanks for answering!

Most admissions officers whom I have heard discuss this indicated that, in your case, the score would not mean much.

I think you should consider taking the AP exam for Chinese. While getting a 5 on a test on your native language is still not very impressive than a 4 on a non-native, it beats getting an 800 on a test where 800 equals about 60th percentile.

I’m actually in sort of the same boat as you are. I’m a native Chinese speaker and I took the SAT French test (I got a 740 :)) and I’m waiting for my AP French results. I thought about taking the SAT Chinese test in November, but I thought the AP would be more impressive (and useful, if I can get some elective credit in college). So, I’m taking the AP in May.

I heard taking a test in your native language might help you later on. It won’t impress admissions much but let’s say you decide to do International Studies or something like that later in college- having an 800/790 in Chinese or whatever your native language is can prove that you’re trilingual, etc.

I’d still say the AP is a better indicator of your proficiency in the language.

well i’m going to be a senior next year so if I take the ap it won’t really show in apps.
I got a 4 on the french ap btw (took it freshman yr).

@bneleh: i don’t think i’ll take int’l studies so taking the SAT Chinese won’t really help, right?
