wow who else here had a totally unqualified teacher and basically did nothing for the whole year and rite now you are cramming for the test on wednesday..............

What exact type of things do you do for "AP Computer Science"?

that was a depressing class. took it last year. spend 50 minutes everyday, looking at computer screen full of black and white, whiel the teacher was at his own computer. seriously, not social interaction at all.

you mainly learn how to program using now java and before the change C++.

Definitely same thing here Ladros. We just played games all the time, once in awhile worked on a program.

Yep, definitely failed the test today.

heh, my teacher actually taught us stuff, so I think i did decently.

It's an awesome class: the teacher is a genius and it's not so much as a class as supervised programming time. We coded all the major sorts and some interesting applets, and it was a decent way to wake up. (it's first period class)

Do you think that the change from C++ is a good thing? In my class we have not worked with java yet. I will be working with it next year for the AP. Is the test difficult enough that it requires more than a year of java programing?
Should I start the transition to Java now, and work over the summer, or will it be enough to be attentive in class?

depends on teacher

If teacher is a "true believer" in the object-orientedness, then you'll be fine, but be very annoyed meanwhile

if teacher is a genius, you'll be fine

if teacher sucks, you're gonna have to work by yourself a bit

make that a lotta bit

my teacher diddn't teach jack. i self studied and i think i did fairly well though.

ya grk its a pretty tough class. The questions on the test arent simple. You have to know the concepts well enough to quickly calculate the answer casue you dont have time to sit there and think and second guess yourself. Also, there a huge jump from comp sci A and AB. We took A but i looked through my barrons book and AB looked killer.

and ya i definitely got owned today. Im guessing most likely a 3, 4 at the best

yeah, my teacher never taught us a bunch of stuff that was on the test (like he never even mentioned what an arraylist was and he didn't really do anything on the case study besides print out the packet and read portions out loud). now that we can officially talk about it, can anyone either 1) post what they think are the right answers for the comp sci a exam or 2) give me a link to the correct answers? I was told that it's likely that someone would post them in the next few days. thanks!

Has anyone here taken the class online/independent study? My school refuses to offer it, so I'm looking to learn on my own for the AP AB next year. Any recommendations/advice?

I basically did an independent study for AB this year - we technically have a teacher, but he doesn't know how to program. (I say this not as a subjective judgment - he told us so on the first day of class. There's no teacher at the school who can program, so he got stuck with us.)

I would recommend getting started with simple coding to learn basic syntax before you get into the more advanced concepts. Download a compiler like JCreator and mess around with some code - learn stuff as you need it for a while (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/index.html is a good reference), working on some standard programming challenges from a textbook or some of the problems at http://www.cs.duke.edu/csed/algoprobs/. Then use a review book or textbook to get into more complicated material; again, actually write the code. Type in examples and expand on them. (You have plenty of time to mess around with stuff - there isn't really that much material on the AB exam.) The case study is a good way to make sure you're covering the same sorts of stuff as the AP is - plus you can make fish eat each other, or just spend a lot of time seeing which color "wins," as our class did.

There are formal online courses, too, but I doubt you really need one.

i'm hoping for a 4 or 5.. but i don't wanna jynx myself.. blah i'm just hoping for the best. :)

i'd feel horrible if i don't get a 4 at least though.. because my high school was ranked number one in THE WORLD by collegeboard in the ap compsci a/ab tests last year, and pretty much everyone at our school gets 4 or 5's. people with literal F's in the class get 3's!

Can someone post sample solutions to the 2005 free response section?

wow they realeased them so quick, must be cause comp sci is so unpopular

um ill post in a bit what i remember i wrote down but im pretty sure that they have lots of mistakes sorry. also, i didnt get the mbs one haha

I self-studied AB sitting in A class. It wasn't very hard, because most of the stuff I had collected over past 5 years, but definetly, just sitting down and coding till he11 comes is the best way. And also get barrons. goodstuff.

for implementation of all the algorithms in java. Cheers!
