Alright, so currently I'm in 8th grade and I'm going into 9th grade next year. I live in the state of Florida. My classes are going to be English Honors 1, Biology 1 Honors, AP Human Geography, Algebra 1, Band 3, and French 1.

I was wondering if there was a way I could replace my lunch period with another class? Not necessarily this year, but just in general. I have heard of some people doing this, but I'm not entirely sure if I'd be able to.

Also, I would like to get an opinion on AP courses. Apparently, for my freshman year, AP Human Geo. isn't going to count much towards my college education, but in future grades it's going to have a high impact. As well, I would like to get an opinion on what to do in the situation of my math courses. I did not finish out my 7th grade school year (I'm doing course recovery right now), and so therefore was not able to take Algebra 1 this year, so I am having to take it in 9th grade. I am smart enough to be in a higher math class, but since I don't previously have Algebra 1 in my history of courses, I can't, and since math builds on itself, it would be pretty difficult to take Alg. 2 without taking Alg. 1 previously. I consulted my guidance counselor about possibly taking Alg. 1 over the summer, but she didn't advise it. I'd like to be able to take AP math courses in future grade levels, but am unsure since I'm starting out with Alg. 1.

Opinions? Experience?

Human geo is a waste of time. Ask for counselor about the math about online, testing out, and over the summer options.

You will probably not be able to get to the point in Math where you can take APs without taking it over the summer. And note that Algebra 2 is likely intended to come after Geometry in your school system, though I do know of some states that go Algebra -> Algebra 2 -> Geometry and so forth.

I just don’t understand why people want to replace their lunch periods with another class. Like why?

Not eating lunch is just not an option for me.

To take AP Calc in HS,you will have to take 1 course during the summer or online or double up.

I would only want to replace my lunch period with another class because I tend not to eat lunch anyways, so it really doesn’t serve a purpose to me except for a time to chat.

Also, how would I go about taking classes online? Could I take them during school or would it just have to be over the summer? I usually have a lot of free time on my hands, so I don’t think it would be that hard.
Alg 2 does come after Geometry in my school system.

Your GC should be able to advise you as to how they are handled at your school.

It’s not wise to replace lunch with a period. At our school, it is now mandatory that freshman students have a period dedicated to lunch. You guys are transitioning to high school which is a huge step. By neglecting to have a lunch period, I guarantee you that you will have problems with homework and tests and quizzes. A lunch period also serves as a study hall as well. Just remember that,

“I was wondering if there was a way I could replace my lunch period with another class?” That depends entirely on your high school’s schedule and policies. At my daughter’s school, lunch is about 22 minutes long, so that is not an option. Ask your guidance counselor, not us.

“Also, I would like to get an opinion on AP courses. Apparently, for my freshman year, AP Human Geo. isn’t going to count much towards my college education, but in future grades it’s going to have a high impact.” Not sure what you mean by that. Take it if you want to take it.

You only have 6 classes in your schedule. If you feel you are capable of more in math, I see two options: 1. take algebra 1 over the summer, online over the summer, or just learn it on your own if your school is forward-thinking enough to allow you to simply test out of it. Are your parents mathematical enough to help you with algebra 1 if you try to learn it on your own? Find out why your GC doesn’t recommend taking algebra1 over the summer–is this a remedial class? You don’t list algebra 1 as being honors for next year, so does it make a difference if the summer class is not honors level? 2. second option is to take geometry and algebra2 simultaneously as a sophomore. You should inquire about this now so you know whether or not you can plan on doing this. You might have to learn a few things on your own, but there isn’t that much in sequence between those two classes, as is evident from the fact that some schools teach alg2 before geometry.

In some schools, towards the last quarter of the school year, in Algebra II, students are introduced to Trig & Algebra III. I guess that’s why Geometry comes before Algebra II ? I am too old to remember all that math. lol

Your GC probably knows more than we can answer, primarily because your school is different than ours.

I was thinking that I could take Alg 1 during school, and then take Geometry online during the school year as well? Or should I just try to take Alg 1 over the summer, and go straight to Geometry for 9th?

Also, about the lunch period, I was more of just wondering if it was recommended. @Hawkace I never thought of it as a study hall, thanks.
