AP Credit and its effect on registration

Hey. I was reading through the livejournal community and this thread concerned me:

<a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/nyu/1226168.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.livejournal.com/community/nyu/1226168.html</a></p>

One dude claims that:

"Stern isn't accepting math credits towards your degree for incoming freshmen. They will only use the credit to determine which math course you will have to take. You'll have to take Calc II if you transfer your AP credit. You can't get your math credit waived anymore."

Is this true?? Also, how does having AP Credits affect registration? Do you really get to register earlier if you have more 'points'? I'm confused. . .

Thanks in advance!

ya that was my thread, i think it was a 2005 rule change, not happy about it tho

you do get the credit from calc, its just a general elective credit, not math credit. Aside from needing 128 credits to graduate, you also need a certain amount of credits in certain specific areas. So in other wards, Calculus will give you 4 credits towards the 128, which will help if you want to graduaute early, take it easy...however it wont count towards your needed math credits. Personally i probably wont transfer over AP calc and just take Calc over and get an easy A, instead of working hard in higher level

Just wondering: if I scored a 5 on AP Chem, does that mean I don't have to take any science classes at Stern?

correct, getting a 4 or a 5 on chem, bio, or envi sci (i think) satsifies the requirement of a natural science.

hmm... so how does AP scores affect registration? does it for incoming freshmen?

and on another note... have any sternies received orientation dates yet?

matt - I don't think you'll get 4 credits for the math even counting as elective... the .pdf says you can't get credit for a math course.

Wait so I can't get any credit for my Ap Stat test tomorrow?!?

you have to take nyu's placement test for stats. . . I hear it's hard, too :(

I've taken APs and I've taken college courses at SUNY Stonry Brook, Suffolk Community College, and Syracuse University. I'm not going through Elementary calc again!!!! But what will they take as credit?

wait, physics b doesn't satisfy the science requirement?
i wasn't planning on studying too hard for the chem ap exam on tuesday...

cosine - this topic only applies to AP credit for Stern, so if you're not going to Stern, don't worry about it

This is the CAS AP Stuff: <a href="http://www.nyu.edu/epubs/preview/ugadmissions/adv.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.nyu.edu/epubs/preview/ugadmissions/adv.html</a></p>

I have a question...how recent is the link from the post above? I'm taking the AP Art History test next week, and i'm going to CAS in the fall. does this mean that its pretty pointless for me to even take the art history ap test?

It says "AP History of Art", I assuming that's the same thing?

That page was last modified March 23, 2003.

Cosine, if you're in a dual-enrollment course you don't need to take the AP's to get credit- as long as you earn a "B" or better in the class you're fine, and there are several statements from NYU on their Q/A board, just search "dual credit." I was feeling the same way you were, but then I realized you get credit as long as you can produce a transcript FROM THE COLLEGE showing that you've already received credit from the college (ie if it's just a class you happen to get credit for- no dice- it needs to be dual enrollment).

It's nice for me because I'm in a CC CompSci course that's taught using C++, which means I would have been SOL on the APs (which use Java).

So yay for dual credits!

When you register during the summer, everyone registers at the same dependent upon your orientation group. However, for spring semester everyone gets a different registration time, which is dependent on how many credits you will have. If you came into NYU with 0 AP credit you will only, most likely have 16 credits, and you will be registering basically the last possible time to register. The more AP credits you have, the better. It does matter too --- registration is one of the most stressful things at NYU. You may put together a "perfect schedule" and get none of the classes you want. It all depends on your quickness registering online and your registration time.
