Hi! I have been stressing over this for the past week.
I am going to apply TAG for UCI as a Business Economics major which is part of the School of Social Sciences. One of the required courses is Econ 20A and I took the AP exam for that with a 4 which covers Econ20A. But on the website http://catalogue.uci.edu/informationforprospectivestudents/undergraduateadmissions/#ap it states that it “May not replace School of Social Sciences requirements for the bachelor’s degree.” I’ve talked to my counselors about this and they were not quite sure what this statement meant.
Anyone with any experience on this? Do I need to take the equivalent course during the Spring term and put it as planned? If I don’t take it, will my TAG get rejected?
However the School of Social Sciences has its own graduation requirements for all students, found on http://catalogue.uci.edu/schoolofsocialsciences/#schoolrequirementstext and part of the requirements are two four-unit introductory courses in social sciences. My interpretation of the rule you found on that webpage is that you can’t use AP Econ credit to satisfy this requirement but it won’t affect your admission, it is just a rule you must meet before you graduate. And you may have already met the 2-course requirement here with classes you’ve already taken at your CC.
The social science majors at UCI have an extra course they may need for graduation purposes. It has nothing to do with transferring. Your score of 4 fulfills both IGETC area 4 and the micro or macro course listed for Econ majors as per that same page. You can TAG without worry re that issue. (This is similar to Berkeley’s L&S requirement of an American institutions course and American cultures course needed for graduation. It is not a transfer requirement.)
