AP Credit Question

I'm a premed bio major, and I'm thinking of using some AP credit. I'm certain I'll have better than a 3 on the AB exam, 50/50 whether it's a 4 or 5. There's also a chance that I did good enough on the bio exam to get a 4, which gets me 4 hours (1 semester). My question is, does Cornell put on your transcript that you got that credit, and list the specific class and credit hours? For example, it says that for Calculus, with a 3-5 on the AB exam, you get 4 credit hours placing you out of 1106/1110 whatever those two cal 1 classes are. Do you get to say "I want credit for this class" or what? How does it show up?

Also, if I do end up getting bio credit, is it better to take 1st semester bio, or 2nd semester?

I know most medical schools have differing policies on AP credit, but I know that all the Texas ones take it as long as on your transcript it says the course you got credit for and the number of credits.

This doesn’t really answer your question but might still be of value to you.

Everything you ever wanted to know about pre-med

i’ve heard that if you’re premed, med schools would prefer that you NOT take AP credit for core classes like bio, chem, etc. go for honors classes if you think that they’d be too easy.

good point cc102…

Ok, so it turns out that I did get a 4 on the bio exam, and 5 on the AB calculus exam. I know it’s generally inadvisable to not use AP credit, but what about using it to get out of a semester of bio, or out of lab both semesters or something so that I can take higher level bio classes? I really wanna take the bio seminar and/or intro to microbio, which I could do if I ditched the labs. I’d still like to take labs down the line for my other bio classes (I’m a bio major), so would this be advisable?

I probably won’t use the calculus credit, as I can probably take the class and do pretty well in it.

However, if I were to send my scores, and wanna place out of bio but not calculus, would they force me into cal 2 since I have a 5 on the AB exam?

how can they force u too take a class when your in charge of using ur own credits …

I remember hearing at an info session that if you had the AP score, that they would force you to take the higher level class, because you already demonstrated competency in that area.

Granted, I do need a year of math for bio major, and a semester of math for med school, so if I used my 5, I could either take Cal 2 or stats, depending.

either way, i’m in arts and sciences and you need PBS and MQR courses to fill requirements and ap/ib credits are not allowed

I’m not worried about that. I’m a Bio major. I’ll have plenty of those.

zfanatic: the reason they advise pre-meds to take the courses (even if AP credit was given) is because these are the only courses that they can compare across the board…

so basically the pre-med requirements are like a benchmark for med school admissions…i’m sure there are people who have gone to med school without taking some courses BUT you can bet they had a great mcat!

Ok. That I can deal with.

I’m still thinking of using my 5 on AB to place out of Cal 1 and take Cal 2, because I need a year of math for my major, but only 1 semester for med school. Does that sound like a good plan?

i would ask dewdrop and norcalguy before making a decision but i think they’ve advised what i did.

you could contact the pre-med advising to see what they suggest as well!

My S went into CalcII with a 5 on the AP exam. Let’s just say that he was woefully unprepared even with that 5 to jump into Calc II. This however, was not at Cornell, so your mileage may vary.
IMHO, go for stats.

^I think med school wants to see at least one semester of Calc taken in the college

I definitely want to take calculus in college. I really enjoy it.

I guess I’ll just ditch the AP credit and make things simpler.
