AP Credit-to take or not to take if planning external transfer to UT

Are there any pros/cons to be aware of for AP Credits, and when to “take them” if you plan to attend another 4 yr university during freshman year and apply for external transfer to UT Fall 2020? Have AP credits for ENG Lit and Lang, BIO, USHIS, WHIS, CalcAB, Psyc and Capstone (but now know this is worthless for credit). So at least 18 of those credits should transfer" toward core requirements between both schools. The extra 3 hours of HIS may be lost.

Is it better to take the credits at 1st school freshman year or wait to take the credit for them at UT?? I keep hearing that there may be something tricky to be aware of pertaining to AP credits so don’t want to mess this up. Anyone know?

Credit-by-exam transfers to UT Austin only when properly transcripted by the awarding college or university, and transcript practices vary widely. For UT’s requirement see https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/transfer-resources/common-credit-issues/credit-by-exam .

The decision of which AP credits to take, and when to do so, is very complicated. Especially for a potential transfer applicant who would have to weigh the pros and cons of whether claiming certain credits comes at the opportunity costs of not being able to take, what likely would be, “easy A” courses to pad his/her transfer application.

I really am not in a position to offer any advice on that score; however, I did want to respond to you concern about the World History course. UT would accept that as credit for HIS 301F or HIS 301J. As you correctly noted above, that course would not satisfy any part of UT’s Core Curriculum. However, there could still be a potential benefit in claiming that credit because many UT degree plans have a built in requirement of a certain number of electives, and claiming that additional 3 hours could also be material in placing the student in a higher classification (freshman, sophomore, junior…) which is relevant to priority in registration of classes - seniors register for classes first then followed by juniors, sophomores and lastly freshman.

In any event, a very helpful tool that can help you identify which AP credits you qualify for is a UT AP Calculator found at the following hyperlink: https://www.cs.utexas.edu/~wang/resources/utap
