My son will be attending our junior college in the fall. He received a 3 on the AP Lang test but would like to ultimately attend a UC. His JC accepts the 3 in lang and will credit him so that he can take the next level but if he went directly to most UC’s it says they only give credit for a 4 or 5. Does this mean that he will need to take the class at the JC to transfer?
UC’s give credit for a 3 or above on the AP Language test.
He will get credit for 1 UC-E course or 1A for IGETC.
See link: https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/ap-satisfy-admission-and-igetc-req.pdf
It will also depend upon UC campus and major on how they accept the credit.
It would be best to contact the UC transfer advisor at his CC for more information.
Note that the answer could be different depending on whether he completes IGETC at the CC before transfer. (IGETC completion is certified at the CC.)
For example, UCB L&S has a list of requirements for transfer admission ( https://admissions.berkeley.edu/transfer-admissions-information-by-college ) and graduation ( https://ls.berkeley.edu/advising/degree-requirements ). IGETC will fulfill the R&C requirement (among others), but a student without IGETC needs a 4 on AP English to fulfill the first half (or 5 on AP English literature to fulfill both halves). Note: UCB engineering and business do not accept IGETC, so fulfilling the UCB requirements for R&C courses would be necessary to transfer to those majors.
