AP Credit

I assume Fordham takes AP Credit, but what score do u need, and how does it work? Do u get credits or u place out? (I'm not sure if that last question even makes sense, I'm pretty confused in general bout how AP credits work)

Any info is appreciated...thanks

You will receive AP credit confirmation from the Dean's Office before you register for classes in August. Fordham usually grants exemption from core requirements with scores of 4 or higher: scores with a 3 will be granted elective credit, but not exempt from core requirements

For example, you took the AP Calculus AB Exam and scored a 4, you will be exempt from the Math core requirement. If you score a 3, you are not exempt, but 3 credits will be added to your transcript.

Indeed, please consult the Fordham Course Bulletin above for more details. Your class dean and adviser will give you more details when Orientation nears.

RE: Calculus AP tests

If students know they are going to Fordham should they take the Calculus AB test instead of the Calculus BC test even if they took BC Calculus, to be more certain of getting core credit?

It sounds like you have to get a score 4 for Fordham core credit whether you take the pretty easy Calculus AB test or the pretty hard Calculus BC test.

Well.....that is not entirely true....some classes like English, even if you get a 4 or 5 (my D took English comp and English lit) (ditto for any History) then you still have to take Freshmen English...but they apply that exemption for Sophomore English. I guess they want you to take all their freshmen classes.

A many state universities they give out full credit for 3 and up and apply it immediately....and they get "sophomore standing" almost immediately. But that is bogus too, as they still have to get into a lot of intro courses or even upper division courses.

I told my D, we are paying tuition no matter what you are taking....so just let the chips fall where they may, take the classes and enjoy them. Who wants to graduate early anyway? Not many do.

What it does is likely makes double majoring a bit easier to accomplish. and that is what my D is going to do.

I frankly wouldnt pass off a High School AP class as a real college class anyway. Even if the AP courses were tough. We have AP mania in this country and its quickly becoming the standard for admission, not just a standard for getting "college credit."

Sit back and relax and enjoy the ride, I say.

So do you have to get a score 4 for Fordham core credit whether you take the pretty easy Calculus AB test or the pretty hard Calculus BC test?

Yes. A 4 is required I believe...but a 3 gives you elective credit.

So if you know you are going to Fordham and you are currently taking BC calculus, if you want math credits, you should take the AB calculus test, not the BC, because it is much much easier to get a 4 on the AB calculus test.

or take BC and get a 5 like I did.

credits are a tricky thing here. If you do premed, all your science AP credits are pretty much worthless. You can only use them to have the opportunity to register for classes earlier than other students. Most med/dental/vet schools want you to take ur sciences at college, and will not accept AP credits as substitutes.
As for BC calc, i got a 5, and i still had to take Calc II. I think the rule of thumb is that no matter what your score is, you are probably not going to place out of anything. At least for premeds.

If I remember correctly, when you take the BC AP test they also give you an AB score. I'm sure your Calc teacher will know the answer.

Fordham doesn't recognize the AB subscore of the BC test. According to the bullletin, they look at the BC score.

http://www.fordham.edu/bulletins/pdf/undrgrd_blltn_04_06/fordhm_undrgrd_bulltn_17-24.pdf

They will look at both. If you are planning to be a Math major, you still need to take Calc II, which involves integration. Otherwise, a 4 or 5 on the AB or BC exams will give you an exception on the Math core requirement.

um, say i’m taking multivariable calc this year and got a 5 on AB exam in junior year, what math class will I be taking? my multicalc grade is an A but I doubt they will give me credit for it…and what is math core requirement, like calc 1?which is like AB and calc 2 is like BC? …im so confussed… and what about stat…do they give any credit to that?
