Now that the official AP notifications have been mailed out, I have a question. D will be starting at Md with a boatload of AP credit, which will take care of most of her CORE requirements. YAY! When it comes time to register for SPRING classes, how are the registration/dates and times assigned? Is there a cut-off....if you have 105+ credits, you register first, 90+ credits, you are in the 2nd group, etc?

We know how valuable the AP credits are in terms of CORE classes and her being able to enter classes at a higher level. Obviously, this first time of registering, she was in the same situation as all the new people coming in. In terms of registration (and being able to get the courses that traditionally get filled up first), how much help will it give?

Yes. Registration is based on total credits-- so if two freshmen take 15 credits their first semester, but one has 15 AP credits, she would register a couple days earlier. It's a big help; the class sections with good professors at good times fill up very quickly, so the sooner you register the better!

Since I've taken a decent amount of CORE-fulfilling classes for the sole purpose that "they're interesting", and I'm majoring, minoring, and in an honors program, I've found that my AP credits have been most useful in terms of registration. Without my APs, I'd still have fulfilled my CORE requirements and be on track with credits for graduation. But registering a couple days earlier than other people my year....THAT'S been awesome. :)

Good...I'm glad to know we were making the correct assumption. Right now, her general plan is to have 2 majors and a minor, and taking honors courses. (She opted out of Gemstone). I know that her major choices might do a 180-degree change, but it's wonderful that she'll have lots of chances to take classes that sound interesting, take a lighter course load, AND get the benefits of early registration. She's still waiting for the results of the AP test she took late, but currently, she has 52 credit hours on her "unofficial transcript" on Testudo....with the missing AP (English Lit), she'll most likely get either 3 or 6 more credits. YAY!

AP's always help. it allowed me to retake a class for a B after I got a C i the first time. why did i retake it? im asian and I got a 77.7% C due to the fact i was in honors math. haha that sucked. it also allowed me to take junior level classes sophomore year and i could get into sections i wanted, and you get to do gemstone or hinman ceos or quest. they are all famous programs that require 12-24 credits, so u need ap's to do them if you wanna get out in 4 years.

52 ap credits might not be that impressive. i congratulate you, but consider this. i am an EE major. the only chemistry i needed to take was chem135, a 3 credit class. i got 8 college credits since i got a 5 in chem, but of the 8, i only needed 3. assuming chem is all i took for ap's, that meant i got 8 college credits but only 3 college credits. i also go 7 credits from stats and comp sci combined but neither counted towards my major. if should have focused more on us history :p

i got 42 credits in aps but most fulfill electives and the core. micro did fulfill business though. and at this rate i'm going to have 59 credits when i register for spring so i'm glad it helps for registration at least.
