How Miami give credits for AP Courses. Do students end up as sophomore instead of freshman if they bring in lots of AP Credits, Does MU encourages this practice or do they want students to take those courses at MU . Sometime it depends upon the Major also.

Like many state-supported universities, Miami makes it very straight forward to get credit for AP/IB testing.
In part, I believe it is aimed at improving four year graduation rates as well as potentially reducing the total cost of a four year degree.

Acknowledging our’s is an extreme case, current freshman daughter received 50 hours of AP/IB credit at Miami. She has junior standing in the second semester of her “freshman” year. These credits eliminated the need for her to take any of the Miami Plan general ed classes except for the fine arts course which she is taking now.

Some of the pre-professional courses are best taken at Miami. So in the case of Chemistry, daughter took CHM141/142 even though she could have received AP Chemistry credit based upon AP exam.

The benefits to her have been tremendous. She has gotten into her major classes much more quickly (she’s a Psych major). She has time for research even in her first year. She may pick up a minor or second major. Her required thematic sequence will be complete by the end of the year. And, most importantly to her, she has an upperclassman parking pass so she doesn’t have to walk a mile from her dorm to retrieve her car when she needs it.
She could easily graduate in three years but based on her experience this year I think I’ll need a crow bar to pry her away from Oxford after the requisite four.

Sons is in Pre-Med still deciding on a Major ( biochemistry, microbiology, bioengineering…) The Med School dont take AP Credit so he has to take those Classes at MU.
He will be coming in with 14-15 AP Exam taken so that should translates to atleast 1 yr or may be more of MU Credit.

D. received credits for her APs. She did not have many and she decided to retake AP Bio becuase it was recommended for pre-meds. She could not graduate earlier in her program, so it did not matter for her. Instead she decided to have couple minors to fill her 4 years.

"The Med School dont take AP Credit " - incorrect. The Med. Schools took D’s credits for AP English and AP Calc. She has actually contacted few Med. School adcoms to make sure. If you are not concinced I strongly advise you to do the same.
D. was a Zoology major. She was accepted to couple top 20s and currently is a 3rd year Medical Student.

S got good credit for his AP’s; technically started college as a sophomore in terms of credits already in his file. he is in the Honors Program (and dorm - Tappan) and both he and we have been very pleased. We love Miami!

Ericd1112: Can I ask your son’s stats? We looked at Miami this weekend and my son loved it.
He has 3.72 GPA and a 31 ACT. He was really intrigued by the Honors program but we are concerned that he may not get in. How is the pace of the honors program and the honors dorm experience??? is there a good balance of academics and fun?
thanks!

I know The honors program is getting more difficult to be accepted to each year.

My D started enrolled at MU with 39 hrs of AP credit. She is retaking all science classes because 1) good refresher and GPA boosters 2) med schools really do like to see that you took your sciences as college classes

D is in the honors program and loves it. AP credits did free her up to be able to pursue a double major. Whether she follows through with two majors remains to be seen :).
