Hi everyone! I have already been accepted to ND and have some questions regarding AP credit. I have already completed 3 AP credits (2 history, 1 calc) and will be taking 3 more exams this spring (english, calc, and chem). So far, I have scored 5 on all of the exams I have taken and am wondering how ND awards credit to these scores. I have seen the chart, but I'm still confused about ND's policy. Do the credits count the same on your transcript as a ND class? Also, if I already have some of the requirements for the First Year of Studies completed though AP examination, what classes do I take in lieu of these requirements? Any information on this or on the course registration process in general would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry for asking so many questions at once, but would these AP credits make it feasible for me to double major (biochemistry and Chinese) and still graduate within 4 years?

Well to answer this I had to go look up my own transcript online to see how things were credited....For all my AP's they show up on my transcript in the following way:

the course that is equivalent to the AP class (look on the nifty chart found on the FYS webpage) is listed as the title for the class (complete with the abridgements made for 4 letter subject title and the 5 digit course number). I have the 3 or 4 credits on my transcript depending on the course, but in place of the grade my transcript shows the letters "AD." (used to read AP on the old irishlink system) What this means in a nutshell is that you get credit in as much as the credits are listed on your transcript. Since there is no grade assessed then these classes are not part of your calculated total GPA or major specific GPA.

Hope this info helps. As to double major with chinese and biochem...that would be tough. I was in biochem program for two years so feel free to ask me questions or PM if you wish. I will say that I didn't change major because I was failing out though.... I know students doing double majors anthro and biochem. It all depends on your motivation and talking to an advisor early (both in FYS and later in Biochem dept.) The biochem advisor is Prof Huber. I can offer my thoughts on him, but not on an open forum such as this message board since it's not appropriate for me to air either positive or negatives about any specific individual on here.

Your other question about what you will be doing if you've already done some of the prereqs is going to be determined by you and your advisor. I would add that you will find there is heavy pressure even if you have the credits from AP for gen chem or gen bio for you to repeat them at the college level. I only know a few who didn't cave to the pressure from advisors to repeat these classes. The standard line is that Med Schools want to see you having done chem and bio at college and not testing out of them. This could lead to another whole debate so I'll wrap things up...

Hope this info helps. If not, let me know where it's not clear and I'll try to revist and clarify things.
