AP credits

@xoxovivann Consdering you have really looked into cal, how would you compare th eresearch opps between cal and GT

Andy: I’d say tech has more to offer! Especially because of the honors program for me, but as a general undergrad I’ve read somewhere that a larger percentage of tech undergrads are involved in research than cal. If I can find the page again for those stats I’ll link you. And people have told me that tech is pretty good for research as well, unless you’re into the whole silicon valley startup thing.

I didnt sign up for the honors prorgam since I was accpeted into the Grand Challenges… Are the opp the same between the two ? I am actually into biomed/bioeng. Berkeley has a very strong bioeng dept while Tech has a ridiculously strong biomed dept…

xoxoviviannnn, YOU GOT ME I’M THE CURRYMONSTER

Andy, tech is really known for Biomed. Cal has a better rep for EECS. That’s not to say that cal’s Biomed dept isn’t strong because it is!! It’s just that techs really good at it too. I was accepted to grand challenges too, but I picked honors over it haha  GC can give you lots of opps from what I’ve heard! I don’t know too much about it because it’s still new but if you wanna talk to people about it there’s a Facebook group for GC kids. You can search the link somewhere on the page  its an awesome program though!! I picked honors for the honors classes because I found the past classes fascinating, not because of anything else

Freelancer : HA. KNEW IT !!!

My d will be joining the GC program and was able to line up a personal meeting with one of the current students. It was definitely a worthwhile visit. 'Got to see the dorm, talk to one of the directors, etc. It is a fairly new program, and is evolving. It originally was a ‘freshman’ program, but they’re now allowing students to continue together past their freshman year if they wish, including living together.

Through that visit, D also made some connections and has already reached out and successfully found a potential research opportunity (unpaid) and a potential paying job related to her sport. Opportunities are there if you take the initiative!

Hello! Hopefully someone can answer my question: Against better judgement, I was told to forgo APs and take classes in college. It’s probably a bad thing to post given all the AP/IB testing going on this week - sorry!!!

But I’ve pretty much learned the equivalent of Calc 1/Math 1501 in school but I didn’t sign up for APs. It seems my options to place out of Calc 1 at GT are to take the class at a college over the summer and transfer the credit, or take Tech’s own placement exam. Does anyone know about the difficulty of Tech’s calc placement exam? Or is anyone in the same situation as me? (probably not though ahaaa) Would it be to my advantage to take the class somewhere else if Tech’s placement exam is especially hard? thoughts?

Don’t ever choose to try easy class unless you want to struggle the higher level math classes. If you take the math class at some cc, you will lack of some advanced concepts so that you will later have to work hard to catch up with other students.

…So are you saying to just study over the summer (retain it) and take GT’s own placement exam? Or to just come in with no credits and take Calc 1 again? I mean, I feel pretty solid on the material and don’t really think I should retake the class.

As a current georgia tech yellow jacket if you have college credit from AP scores I would definitely suggest exempting and move on. Youre only exempting core classes so they wont impede your learning for your major specific classes. If you struggle with classes like Calc II or Physics II after exempting classes like CalcI or physicsI go to the Center for Academic Success those tutors rock. They are students who have taken those classes and gotten As and they definitely know what theyre doing.

If you want to take the placement tests all I can say is good luck. The professors just gives you the previous semester Calc I or Calc II final exam and let me tell you if you didnt take the class at tech I would have no idea how in the world you would pass that exam. but if you want to take it you can apply before august 14th and the test date is August 16th at 1pm.
