AP credits

So I will most likely be entering Northeastern with AP credit in government, world history, psychology, APES, biology, and lang. I’m having trouble understanding what that will get me out of. I’ve used the equivalency database, but i was wondering more broadly how these credits will affect my academic schedule. If I want to graduate in four years with two co ops, will these allow me to do that?

It depends partially on your major, I would need more info to give you exactly what they would be used for.

AP Englishes will get you out of First Year Writing, one course
Government / World History will satisfy the social science part of the NU Core
Psychology will give you credit for PSYC 1101, relevant if you want to take more psych.
AP Biology will get you out of the science requirement (2 courses) for your major if it is present, though if you are Biology retaking it is strongly recommended.
Not sure if ES gets credit but if it does, see Bio.

These also go towards general electives.

What major are you? Once I know that I can give you specifics. 4 years 2 co-ops should be doable with the AP’s above and summer classes.

Northeastern has just redone the core (Gen Ed) requirements, so I don’t know exactly how this will fit in exactly. You’ll likely be able to fulfill a few of your core classes and your freshman writing class. What is your major?

At least in the college of science, they now say that you can do any major as a 4 year, 2 co-op program even if you start out with my credit. So I’m guessing you’d be able to do that. Having the AP credit will likely free up space because you won’t have to take as many form classes, meaning perhaps an extra summer free. Or, you might have space for a minor or other elective classes.

I will be majoring in journalism, although I’m interested in maybe minoring or majoring in sociology as well. Thank you for replying!

This based off journalism, expect similar for sociology.

It looks like you will get out of first year writing. That’s 4 credits.

AP Psych, World History, Government, and Biology will not get you out of anything but will count as general electives. That will be 20 credits. Bio will cover your science requirement.

So, you will get about a year and a half of credits, though not many to your major. A lot of your gen eds that would be satisfied by your AP’s will be taken care of by your major, so you will still need Analytical Math Levels 1 and 2 for example.

Overall, you certainly have enough credit to comfortably do your degree with a 4/2 plan. I can’t say exactly what will be satisfied, but I can tell you that you will enter with 24 credits pending passing AP scores. That’s plenty of credit. You may need a summer class or two, and that’s very normal for NEU. As a freshman I am currently in summer classes to do a similiar 4/2 plan with AP credit but for CS.

@pengsphils Are you doing NUTerm? I believe this is the first year for that option.

Yes, but it isn’t the first year for classes in the summer as a freshman as far as I know. NUterm just means some more activities, and a few more expected classes for freshman to take in Summer 1.
