Does anyone know how AP credits work with Swat? I'm debating whether or not to take the Calc AP test tomorrow. I also have AP Spanish and AP Lit which I am definitely taking.

http://www.swarthmore.edu/NatSci/math_stat/ap_pi.html

Toffee, try this link to find out Swat's policy. In short, if you do well on the AP Calc exam (score of 4 or 5) you can get both credit and placement into a higher course. The credit can be used to satisfy some of your requirements.

Thanks! I'm a planned English major so I just e-mailed a current Swattie who informed me it didn't do much. So I get to relax today...although it's costing me $82.

Just so you know, Toffee, my current junior at Swat used his AP Calc score to satisfy one of the needed credits in the Math/Hard Sciences area. He is a social sciences major. Not sure what the current Swattie meant by the reply "it didn't do much." If you scored high enough on the AP exam, you could take one less math/science course and take something you'd prefer!

Here is the link to a summary of AP credit allowed. It varies a lot by department:

It appears you get direct credit for high scores on the AP Calculus tests, as momof3sons has indicated in her post.

Oh crud. I guess I better start cramming.

Isn't it possible to take non-math courses to make up for the math/science? Such as Psychology? That sounds much more fun. Also, I already took the AP Biology test last year and got a 4 which seems to count for something according to the site. How many credits are we expected to have? I realize by the time I get answers I'll probably have decided whether or not to take the test.

You can take non math courses for the nat sciences requirement, but not psych. If you just have AP bio credit, you can satisfy the nat science reqs by taking one of bio 1 or bio2, and then any other nat sciences class (physics, chem, math). If you do well on the AP Calc as well, you'll be done if you just take one of bio 1 or bio 2. Good luck!

You will need 3 credits (if I remember correctly) in math&science. One can be earned through AP test. The others can be satisfied by taking math, statistics, CS, or science classes at Swarthmore. (There are some classes that can provide a relatively easy credit for 'mathematically challenged'.)

It is very unwise not to take the AP test you've already paid for if you can get any kind of credit for it. You will also need to have 20 credits outside your major to graduate. It is usually not a problem, but for people who want to take a lot of classes in their majors, having those AP credit helps.

toffee - there is one pysch course you can take that does fufill the natural sciences requirement, PYSCH 37: perception. If I remember correctly, a 4 on the AP Bio exam doesn't get you credit or placement (I took it as well and got a 4), but if you remember the material at all, it'll help you in bio 1 or 2. The math/science departments here are awesome about offering classes for humanities/social sciences majors in their departments, such as intro to mathematical thinking, intro to statistical thinking, chemistry in the human environment, etc.

I took it. It was all kinds of horrible. Thanks everyone though. Are there no "easier" math classes to take to get rid of math/science req? And by "easier" I mean as little math as possible? If not, I'll just suck it up. I thought I was through with math though...darn!

The intro math class (Math 003) is pretty easy (I'm taking it right now!) and lots of fun. We learn about the stuff behind concepts in math, like one day we talked about how to prove the Pythagorean Theorem, but there's not a lot of computational stuff to do. Seriously, it's the perfect math class for non-math inclined people.

There are some pretty easy math and statistics classes (and you can take them pass/fail). You can take PYSCH 37: Perception for the lab requirement. It really isn't a problem for most people. There even is one class that is cross-listed for math and dance (so you can get a math credit for it).

yay!! thanks everyone again! leave it to swat to make a class like intro to math interesting! everything is an exclamation!

Hah, my remaining 4 tests can give me a total of 0 credits. Makes it seem, well, not worth studying for, haha.
