Is it harder to get accepted through EA than RD?

I can’t find any stats on EA. CMU probably never published it. Technically, CMU does not offer EA. Only students who attended the APEA summer program can apply early by 9/1. So if you are still considering EA, it’s already ended for 2010. Now you can only consider ED or RD. Between ED and RD, I found somewhere said ED 35% RD 34% in 2006. I think ED is better because of binding commitment. Also, ED could be deferred into RD, so the chance should be better. Keep in mind, ED is binding, you must go to CMU if you get accepted through ED.

CMU admission information can be found here:

I suspect that EA acceptance rates are much higher than RD, which is why my son took a shot at it. This makes sense if you consider that EA applicants have already been through 2 qualifying rounds. Initially, they were accepted into the EA/AP program(assume a 70% acceptance rate) and then demonstrated they can handle actual CMU classes with either A’s or B’s(assume only 40% did this). Look at it as a weed out process. My son took Calculus and Physics I, 22 units in 6 weeks. Typical CMU freshman take 46 units in 16 weeks. If you think CMU is hard during the regular school year, try it in 6 weeks!

According to a CMU FAQ, APEA acceptance was approx. 30% in 2007, varies each year.

So yes, I would agree APEA is a 2 qualifying rounds process. For such a small group, 135, I would guess acceptance rate likely to be very different each year. Not sure how many, out of 135, actually got in.

As for re-apply, my S said he heard 2 diff stories. CMU application said EA rejects will not be reviewed in ED or RD. But someone called CMU and heard that you may apply to a different school in RD. So if you got rejected to CIT in EA, then CIT won’t review again. But you may try HSS and/or others. Definitely call CMU to confirm.

I called CMU couple times. In my experience, CMU staffs have been very friendly and extremely helpful.

Actually, 30% is the number of original applicants who eventually enrolled. I suspect that more than half decided that $8,000 was a little too rich when it came time to send in a check.
CMU says on their site that the acceptance rate for the AP/EA program is higher than RD.

This year I think there were about 150 in AP/EA. If only 40% had decent grades in AP/EA and some of those decided not to apply, I think only about 50 actually applied EA.

Keep in mind, for EA and ED applications, colleges can review only based on test scores and GPA prior to the senior year. AOs typically don’t want to review the same application again. For RD, send in the latest transcript with grades in the first quarter of the senior year. With additional much-improved information, AO may be willing to review again since it’s not the same app.

On a separate note, make sure to check on admission requirement. CMU requires SAT or ACT, and 2 SAT subjects. Make sure they got everything needed. My S found out on the where-am-I-in-the-process page, a school report was missing. Luckily we called CMU to confirm what was missing, then called his HS to resend.

Tamiami, good points.

Base on your figures, say 70% to APEA, 50% went, 50% of which applies, that’s 18% of the original pool. Like your son, most of these remaining students have something impressive. I would agree EA acceptance should be high.

I hope your son will find a best fit. This college admission process is very stressful not just to the students but also to the parents. Good grades in this quarter should improve his chance. Good luck!

“Keep in mind, ED is binding, you must go to CMU if you get accepted through ED.”

You must go UNLESS you applied for financial aid, and YOU decide that the package offered is insufficient to support attendance:
