I’m going to community college in a few days. I’ve noticed on my schedule they’ve said my AP credits for AP Lang are being counted toward an elective class (English 100), and making me take English 101: Research and Composition. This doesn’t seem right to me, because the two classes seem relatively similar and I believe my credits should be covering 101, not 100. What are your thoughts? I hate English and I’m not a big fan of repeating classes.
I am sure your college has a standard protocol/equivalency they follow in granting external credit, and maybe you need to find out what that is to be sure they are applying it accurately in your case. Perhaps their 101 class has specific content (academic research and writing) that is not treated as thoroughly in AP Lang. Some colleges I am familiar with only grant elective credit for a score of 3, 1/2 required credit for a 4, and 1 required credit for a 5. So check with your registrar on the college’s policy.
This is not unique. Many college will give a general credit when there is no direct AP equivalent. Additionally, for some colleges that have a freshman writing requirement, even a 5 does not waive the college’s requirement.
As mentioned above, the registrar’s office at the college will have the policy for that college. If your question is how do you circumvent it, then the answer is: you can’t, most likely.
First every college has there own name/unit number for classes. Typically many colleges require two semesters of English and some require a literature class beyond the two semesters. It could be that English 100 is the first semester of English and English 101 is the second semester of the typically required English classes. In general one year of AP English in high school would count as 1 semester of English in college though each college choices if/how to give credits for AP credits based on scores. My own daughter did 9th and 10th grade English honors at her high school and did Eng. 101 College Writing I and will be taking Eng 102 College Writing II for her senior year English high school graduation requirement It sounds like the college may have given you credit for the first semester and you only need to take the second semester.
