Hey guys, are any of you taking the AP exam for Eng (Lit and Comp)? I am wondering if I should...

There is no exemption, but you can use still use the 3 credits you get for it towards graduation, right? I am very confused about all this AP Exam credit.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't count for anything, but I'm still going to take it, just out of courtesy to my english teacher (who looked like she was going to cry when I said I might not take it).

the point of taking the class is to prepare for the ap exam at my school, so basically everyone takes it regardless of how little credit they'll get.

well it's one of the best classes, but you do things to get ready for the exam, so some of it would be pointless if you weren't taking the exam. Definetely the most enjoyable class in the school however.

do things such as. . . ? fill out practice tests? multiple choice English? Fun. But at least you enjoyed it, which is good. I just hope you didn't waste your time on preparing-for-test-not-learning-activities.

No, that's not what I mean. I mean the things you do are geared towards things on the ap test, and the ap test is a requirement (for this class specifically, not for all ap classes).

actually, I enjoy taking practice tests. I like reading the passages and analyzing them and just being exposed to new literature. Just because I'm reluctant to take an 4-hrs-long, $82, won't-benefit-me-at-all-in-the-future exam that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the class.

garland is right...taking it doesn't exempt you from anything...BUT TAKE IT ANYWAY. you can use the credits! it might end up meaning you can take one less elective (which would be nice if you decide to do a crazy major--it would give you some more free time).

"The point of taking a class at my school is to learn and hopefully enjoy yourself. Weird."

We need more people like you at Columbia, instead of the EC-grabbing, SAT-tutored, trophy-hunting "go-getters" who actively destroy this institution's intellectual heritage.

But less of the holier-than-thou attitude. I mean, everyone knows the goal of a class is to learn. If it's an AP class, you learn for the AP test too, obviously. I don't find it that weird, to be honest, Jono.

Yes, some schools you are required to take AP Exams. As for Columbia, I don't believe they give exemption, however, if you score a 5, you get 3 credits. I'm pretty sure it's only a 5 though, 4 and 3 don't get you anything.
