AP English Language Exam Thread

well I must be the dumbest person because I thought the MC and writing were hard.
I was never good at writing, I don’t know how to incorporate, sophisticated diction, vocabulary and what not even though we had practice with many of the previous FRQs. We had like 17 of them and I usually get 2s, consistent 3s, two 4s, I think only twice did I get a 5, never higher.
We took 6 practice tests from Cliffs, and were given the answers and explanations later. Our teacher doesn’t go over the tests with us, or explain what some literary term meant.
I hate it when it asks us if a sentence is referring back to some paragraph, or analyzing the purpose of some passage.

my examples for the last frq were a personal story (which was completely made up) and a historical figure. is that possibly acceptable for a high score?

for the second essay… i simply pointed out one example of satire in first passage… and one in the second passage… that was two body paragraphs nicely seasoned with cowcrap…

THATS how bad my analysis essay was.

On that last essay I thought of making stuff up, but I couldn’t, I just couldn’t lie, cause I suck at making stuff up. I got no creativity. That and the other essays plus the M/C bombed my grade.

Just wondering. Were we supposed to talk about more than one different type of issue for the synthesis or was it ok to give 4 different examples of one issue?

I too contemplated making something up but then I remembered this wasn’t the SAT.

Are you not allowed to make stuff up on the AP?

^heck no dude

I am really worried and upset with how I did. I worked so hard and did so well in the actual class, (I consistenly got 8s and 9s on my essays and most people got like 6s), but I think/know that I bombed one of the essays and I think I ruined all of my chances at a decent score. I normally do okay on the MC, (usually about 10 wrong), so I am hoping that it will pull me up. I think on the synthesis I got an 8 and on the persuasive I think I got a 7-8. But I honestly believe that I got a 1 or a 2 on the rhetorical analysis. I don’t know what I was thinking. I was pressed for time, hardly touched on rhetoric and went off on some tangent about political parties. Pretty much, I FAILED that essay. Do I have any shot at a 3 still? Can you fail one essay and still do okay overall? I HOPE SO!

my english teacher bumped my grade down on a synthesis essay when i got the facts about nixon’s watergate scandal wrong…i didn’t even make teh whole thing up

I mean, if you make up a personal story, the AP people aren’t gonna track you down and ask if it really happened right?

You can TOTALLY make things up. They won’t know. You could say that you had cancer or talk about how you had to struggle with your mothers death or say you met Obama. They have no clue. As long as your evidence fits, you can make things up. I did in my last essay, but I had never tried making up stories before. I would feel weird lying to my teacher, but to some random AP grader… who cares? lol

Oh, well, getting facts wrong about a well known subject isn’t good. You can’t change history, ha! But you can make up stories about your life and that’s no big deal. They will NOT track you down.

I never tried making up stories either. Today I did, and it was a sad attempt, it wasn’t very convincing at all.

Yes, you can make up personal stories. Are you guys ■■■■■■■■? Like these people are going to do background checks. As long as you don’t claim something ridiculously outrageous like “…and that was the 4th time I cured cancer”.

Having said that, are you allowed to include personal anecdotes? I know (esp. for the 3rd essay) it says refer to literature, blah, and experience. But I always heard that you shouldn’t use “I” in an essay. Any ideas?

But if you’re allowed to use them, yes, you can embellish a story a little.

its fine to make stuff up as long it fits…it says use examples from your own observations and experiences for the argument construction essay.

how are they supposed to know your experiences were made up

you shouldnt be using personal stories. This isn’t the SAT.

you can make stuff up as long as its credible.

I didn’t like the satire. There was really nothing to analyze…I simply talked about how society argues for the sake of arguing and uses invective without any logical or intellectual merit.

Synthesis was okay, but I think I was too broad and general.

Third one was good, but I crossed out so many things so it looked really messy. I wonder if the readers will get frustrated at the messiness and mark down.

I mean personal anecdotes. Yes I tried making up a personal anecdote, using first person because I didn’t know any other way to write an anecdote into the essay.

I did pretty well. Multiple choice was a breeze, my essays were good, but short. Would I get scored down for only writing about 2 pages per essay?
