What prep books would you suggest for both? And how hard would you say each test is? Please don't come from the "CC" 4.0 perspective, but how would a 3.4 honors/AP kid do? How hard is the math on APES? I have previously taken AP Human Geo (3), AP World (2), and APUSH (4). So, I really do not know what to expect since my scores are all different. I've also never taken a non social studies AP exam. I really didn't study much except for a couple days beforehand. I'm a senior btw. I really want to get a 4 on both of them, the schools I'm looking at (CTCL's) require a 4 for credit. Thanks!

I studied Princeton Review for APES along with released AP Exams and I got a 5.
Just read through it, take notes, take practice tests and do all the FRQs!!!

Thanks! Any other suggestions?

I think yodelo offers good advice - studying old FRQs is key along with using a review book. I’ve also heard that PR is good for APES.

Given that one can access 10+ years of FRQs for any AP exam - there should be little reason for one to do poorly on any AP. The AP isn’t going to ask arbitrary free-response questions - all are based on major themes CB thinks that you should know and you can discern what CB thinks is important by doing the FRQs for practice.

I read on another thread that Smartypants is also good for APES. Which prep book is the best for AP Lang? Thanks for the advice.

To be honest, I’m not sure how helpful review books could be for AP Lang OR APES, but that might just be my opinion. I would reccomend getting your hands on old FRQ’s and tests for APES, and making sure you have at least a basic knowledge of each area of study. Trust me, it’s NOT that in depth. For AP Lang, as long as you follow writing rules taught in your class, and write practice essays you should be fine. I took both tests last year and got a 4 on both. To be honest, I did really poorly on the APES tests in class, and thought for sure I would fail the AP test, but I think what saved me was being a REALLY good writer; the essays will save you if you’re iffy on multiple choice. Write clearly and address the prompt like crazy. As for AP Lang, I think I could have gotten a 5 if I’d only remained a little more focused. After 3 (4? I don’t remember) essays in an hour and a half you start to get a little stir crazy and unfocused.

If you’re still looking for books, I would reccomend the REA AP crash course series; there’s one each for AP Lang and APES. I only used the AP US one, but it seriously saved my life. It cuts out all the useless information that definitely WILL NOT be tested, and to be honest, by second semester I was reading the book during class instead of listening to the teacher, as he was always off topic and frequently incorrect about the information. I got a 5 on the test and I credit the REA book 100%.

Hope that helps! Good luck! :)

i disagree. I studied soley from Princeton Review, FRQs and released MCs and I got a 5

I think I’ll just get Princeton Review for both books. I know some of the colleges I got into do not even accept APES credit, so hopefully I’ll end up somewhere where the $$$ won’t go to waste.
