My daughter is torn between which of these two classes to take next year. She is also taking next year, AP lit, env. sci, and Econ. Not that one class will be less work than the other, but she understands that Euro is very heavy in memorization of facts. She does well in French, but not because she is a natural. What is the better choice? Or are they both as bad as each other?
The workload will be dependent upon the teacher, and she can best gauge that by asking students in the current class.
From her current 3 choices, IME, AP Lit is very heavy on reading and writing. APES and AP Econ combines will probably equate to the workload of AP Lit.
As far as AP Euro vs. AP French, in my mind, it’s a coin toss. Whichever one your daughter prefers. In a previous thread, you stated, “She is a junior, taking two APs, two Honors, and college French” in which case AP French may be repetitive/redundant. If she’s taken either APUSH or APWH, she’ll be familiar with the format of the AP exam, which in my mind, is over half the battle.
I would go for French. Most colleges dont give credit for euro
IMO, the OP would be better served by giving advice unaccompanied with unsubstantiated claims.
Right
I have the same problem! I think I’m going to go with french!
She decided on French.
If this helps anyone, it’s almost a year later. She is very happy she decided on AP French. It’s her favorite class, and it turns out virtually all the colleges she applied to either give credit for a 4 or 5, or she can place out of language altogether. Her friends who take AP Euro are also really enjoying it, but it is a lot of work. If you really enjoy history, you will probably like the class.
@Lindagaf Thanks for the update. It’s rare that people come back and tell us what they actually decided.
No problem, skieurope. And to add to it, if anyone else is looking at this: AP Econ, good class, but you really have to study. Micro is so far more interesting than Macro. AP Lit is more work, but if you got 5 on AP eng Lang, you will probably get 5 on lit too, as long as you do the work. AP Env. Sci, a lot of busy work. She doesn’t care for it. The workload for four APs is okay, but she thinks 5 APs is probably too much if a student is carrying a full class load. All these opinions are strictly from my D:-)
I think this comes down to preference and skill set; for me, the opposite was true.
As I’ve said many times, the workload depends so much on the teacher. The College Board regulates the content of the AP class, but not the assignments given.
Yes, that is completely true. I think also that initial interest is a big consideration. My D had little interest in environmental sci, but felt she needed a fourth year of science. In retrospect, I think she should have done bio. At least she found it interesting back in 9th grade.
