AP Exams

I know I read something about this on here before, but what are kids doing--is the consensus that the seniors (USNA appointed) are not taking the AP exams since USNA doesn't accept them?

USNA does take them for some of the sciences.

My Mid decided not to take his senior AP exams. It saved us a bunch of money. The risk is that for some reason, a student does not take the oath on I-Day and then is out of luck regarding potential credits for AP courses. USNA prefers that you take the validation exams anyway. If you have a 5 on an exam, you may be exempt from certain validation exams. It worked out for my son who ended up validating a good number of courses.

At my CWV someone asked about AP exams and one of the USNA admissions people said that they do not accept any AP scores. However, while at another meeting with my congresswoman and some current mids, one of the mids said that some AP scores can be validated.

not worth taking if you got accepted already

Supposing they still do it the way they did it back in the day...

Even if you haven't taken the AP, you can still take the validation tests when you get to the Academy. I did not take AP Spanish or Mathematics, for example, but I was able to validate 4 semesters of language and two of Calculus just by taking the exams.

I honestly don't remember if they took AP scores for validation, or if they required the exams. I remember exams for chemistry, calculus, language, and physics.

Take all the ones you can. In my case, after a devastatingly-bad semester (I still can't believe I didn't get ac-boarded), I was able to use the extra space in my course requirements to retake several course and help my GPA. It also allowed me to breeze through 1/C year. It's WORTH IT to validate anything you can, with the understanding that you WILL be taking harder courses your Plebe Year.

I have heard conflicting info. Should the plebe bring a calculator for validation tests? What are the tests for?

We've already paid for 5 AP tests coming in May....for the logic that until that right hand is raised on June 28th, anything can happen ( we're talking injury mostly) and we want to keep all our options open. Also taking AP tests, even if you still have to validate USNA tests, continues to prepare you mentally for the rigors of academia and college that will be just around the corner.

Even though I know that the class will most likely not be validated for AP US Gov. I really do not wish to take the test, but at my school if we don't take the test we do not receive the credit for it being an AP class and the credit drops down to a regular social science credit.

Good point Wisconsin.... I think a lot of schools likely have that policy. It can hurt your class standing even.

yeah same here Wisconsinavy2010; if we take the class, we're REQUIRED to take the test.

I'll still take all my tests next year regardless of where I go ( it better be USNA though... ). I would want to know what all my hardwork all year means. Of course, I only pay 8 dollars a test. Yall probabaly pay some exorbitant amount...

This may be a little random, but does that mean if I take 3 years of Spanish in High School I can validate out of taking it at the academy? I dont realy understand what that chart is saying.

glitterhairdye....8$??????We pay 82$ per test!!!!!

Yea, our school district is pretty poor, our music and arts don't get any funding, but we have enough money to take that much off for APs. I guess it's because we offer so many? I know I wouldn't be able to take it if I had to pay $82.

That's why. Many districts pay to get students to take the tests. I know someone else on here is in a district that pays something like 100 dollars per test to you if you at least get a 3. My district, we pay like 60 dollars and nooooo rewards for it cause half the school takes them!

Well, I guess we get what happens when you live in Ca. Thanks to some tax changes from the 70's as well as an out of control State Legislature that spends us to the brink of bankruptcy....we parents pay for just about everything that used to be 'covered'....bus fees/sports/exhorbitant band and music fees/test fees. Heck, I went to Catholic school for 12 years and sometimes I feel like I pay as much as my parents did for my education as I do for my kid's education!

So now all you who go to USNA get your 'free' education right??? :-)

My husband joked for years about his "free" USNA education.....

All you young people, once you raise your right hand on June 28th and then graduate, have the next 9 years of your life at least mapped out for you. Liberty isn't free.

You young people are AMAZING!

The United States Naval Academy....

....a $250,000 education rammed up your ass one nickle at a time!
