AP Exams

I am an incoming freshman at Northeastern. I'm taking AP Spanish Language and AP English Literature, and I'm deciding whether I should take the AP exams or not. Does Northeastern accept exam credits in those AP classes?

Yep, you’ll get out of College Writing with AP Lit. I got a 5 on AP Spanish Language and it counted as two courses (8 courses), which is basically the reason I have sophomore status as a freshman. I highly recommend you take the exams! With sophomore status you get to register for classes earlier, which is very useful.

blinkangel44: How many AP exams did you take in total? Was it getting the 5 in AP Spanish that got you the sophomore status, or a combination of AP exams in total.

Maze31: My son is also taking the AP Spanish Language and AP English Literature exams.
What will you be majoring in?

I got 5s on AP Lang & Comp, AP USH, AP Environmental Sci, AP Psych, and AP Spanish Lang. I got a 4 on AP Lit. I believe AP USH and AP Spanish Lang both counted as 8 credits. I got 4 credits for the others. So I ended up with 32 credits, which I believe is right around the threshold for sophomore status.

This is from '07, but it should help: http://www.northeastern.edu/admissions/pdfs/APChart_FL07.pdf

jumpstart- I’m majoring in Communication Studies in honors, how about your son?
blinkangel- thanks for your help.

Take them based on what you want to do (and your chances of passing, of course). English will get you out of taking College Writing, which is a HUGE plus if you don’t like writing classes. Spanish would be great if you are planning on getting a BA, because they require language credit (not sure how much).

32 credits is as if you completed two semesters-- so you sign up as a second semester freshman (aka rising soph).

Personally, if you have a chance at passing, I’d take them. AP fees can sometimes be harsh depending on your school’s policy, but it’s over 4 thousand dollars for a normal 4 credit course. So if you come in with some credit and can graduate a semester early or can skip out on some summer courses… Worth it!

maze31: My son will be majoring in business. He seems most interested in the International Business program…we’ll see.

based on my AP’s i estimated about 34 credits, which i guess means sophomore status, but that can be still four years of school at NU right? other than the fact that it costs way less money, what are some other advantages to skipping a year?

also, 10 of those credits i would get from the bio exam, but i got into the college business administration and plan on double majoring in marketing and english. so would NU still offer me those bio credits?

You get the credits, but they count as electives. So despite however many credits you have coming in, you still have to satisfy the core and major requirements. However, since I came in with 32 credits, my friend did tell me to look into a second second baccalaureate… I’m not really 100% sure of what that is, but at least the credits wouldn’t be going to waste I guess. Although I do have to say that getting to pick classes a day before all other freshman is very useful (at least in my experience)!

when i applied, i didn’t send my AP scores, even though i put the grade on my commonapp… so does this mean i have to send the scores to NEU later on?

Yeah, you only officially send the scores to whichever school you choose to attend. If you’re taking AP tests this spring, you can do that right on the test (for free?).

ooh yeah i totally forgot… thanks for the reminder :)

I came in with AP and got out of a few required courses like gen chem (I was a chem major) and college writing. This openned up slots later on for electives or graduating early. Because of my credit I can graduate in four years with two co-ops even though my freshman year I didn’t really take anything that I should have taken.

neuchimie, how many ap classes did you take/how many credits did that translate into at NEU?

^Check out the link I posted in post #4 for the break down.

[And I know you were asking neuchimie, but I took 6 APs and got 32 credits, because 4 were 4 credits and 2 were 8 credits.]

I actually didn’t take too many. I was an IB student (which pretty much get you the same credit as AP), so I had exams in English, Math, American History, and Chemistry. Those got me out of college writing, calc 1 and 2, one history credit that doesn’t matter to me because I decided to take a history class freshman year anyway, and gen chem 1 and 2. That doesn’t sound like much, but that’s more than a semester right there. Hence my statement that it is always worth it to take the AP exam. haha

okay cool. i got into the school of business, but i also took ap bio (which is 10 credits). do you think credits will help me at all or will they just be counted towards elective hours that i should probably spend on classes suited to my major?

I am the parent of a current NEU senior. The AP credits do help. You should get as many as you can. They count as elective credits. That gives you higher standing when you register for classes and select housing (after your fall freshman semester).
Due to those elective credits my son will be finishing his degree early. Finishing early equals saving money.

^Just a minor correction: AP credits can allow you to register for classes early (if you meet the credits requirement for being a sophomore), and this is a very, very good thing. However, they do not allow you to select housing early. I have sophomore status and many other freshmen without sophomore status have much better lottery numbers than me. And there are legit sophomores who transferred here who have worse lottery numbers than me (because this is their “first year” here). My friend was a spring admit and she has a lottery number that is before the supposed beginning of the freshmen numbers. The whole system makes no sense to me, but I think it’s gonna all work out :)
