What is expected of you when you answer a free response, as in how long? I am planning on taking the AP Bio next year and I was wondering how much writing is required for a free response question.

Enough to answer the question. But be careful to show all work, every step, because each one is worth a point or so.

Take a few practice tests and you'll get the hang of it.

So how long were your free response answers? I have heard from some people that their answers were like 1-2 pages and that each question is like an essay.

bio usually run one page front and back per question.

ap central has answers that were provided and the score each received. looking at those may give you a good idea about length.

Thanks for the info guys. Crashingwaves, where is the score for each response?

click on scoring commentary

Thanks crashingwaves.

I found myself doing 3-4, at most 5, pages for each AP Bio question. (Then again, I think I recall writing in fairly large letters... but I don't know.) The questions are broad enough to keep you writing. Don't worry about not having enough facts to fill those pages.

Thanks for the advice.

If each free response is worth 10 points, then wouldn't it be possible to get a 5 without even doing/failing the free response if you ace the MC?

I, of course, do not intend on doing this, but is this possible?

It is possible my buddy was well into the 4 range just with the MC...

theoretically, if u got all 100 MC right without answering a single FR, you would be borderline 4/5. Also, for each FR, u must make 10 points, and 1 point is just saying something like "Water is a polar molecule" and elaborating on that in another sentence.

Cool, thanks for the tip.
