Is it a difficult one? How much homework? Is it useful?
Depends on your school and teacher.
Ask people in your HS who took it this year.
I believe OP is a parent.
No, it’s one of the easier ones. So easy, that many top colleges give no AP credit for it. However, because the test is often taken by freshman as a first AP class, the % of 5’s is quite low.
Depends on the teacher
Depends on the goals of the student.
It is a really interesting subject. I believe that the some colleges don’t accept credit b/c it isn’t a course they TEACH rather than ease.
I just took ap human geo this year. The class was way harder than the exam, but I had a bad teacher. The exam was a joke. Also, I didn’t find the class very interesting. But I’m not interested in social studies. The most interesting chapters were religion and
Thanks a lot!
It is difficult to ask current HS students, because students and parents have “happy duck attitude” - smile and pretend that classes are very easy .
If you go to the college board site you can find a detailed description of the curriculum. See if it interests your child. Posters on this site consider it to be very easy.
I don’t think people pretend that classes are easy, not around here anyhow. I hear plenty of complaints from both kids and parents.
It was my favorite AP class by far. The subjects covered in it pop up again and again and I wish schools emphasized it more.
I took it at a Community College because I needed it to enter a Masters program. You can probably get by with less work than I did, but like Yog S, I found it one of the most useful courses I’ve taken, although it’s far from my own field.
Thanks to everyone!
I am a parent. My D signed to AP Hum Geo for the next year. It gives extra credit in her school. I worried because she signed up for several (more useful) AP classes and I don’t want to overload her.
Useful and interesting because it’s one of the very few classes in the HS curriculum that discuss the world as it is now (with APES). It’s easy so it’s a good GPA booster. It shouldn’t be taken instead of AP History but is a fine “complement” for 10th-12th grades, or can be a “gateway to AP” class for 9th graders.
AP Human Geo was pretty easy, barely any homework. To pass you obviously have to pay attention. Shouldn’t be too hard.
That in itself should tell you the value of such a course.
the only class my D didn’t get credit for at NYU was US History. In some cases it has to do with the WAY the info/ classes are structured by the college. Obviously a college will teach US history, but not the way the college board sets it up
My daughter has success with this exam as the “gateway to AP” mentioned earlier. Took the course as a freshman and she had a fantastic teacher who was rigorous without demoralizing the students. She scored a 5.
Since this is in the parent’s column I’ll answer it from that perspective, since both dragons took it in 9th grade. They both enjoyed the class, one got an A and a 5, one got a B and a 4, and they’re not super brainiacs or anything, just your typical bright kid kind of kid.
They do enjoy reading, writing, participating in animated discussions about modern societal topics, and don’t mind the amount of data and info the course has.
Additionally, both teachers who taught them were really well thought of both in the parents’ circle of gossip and by the kids themselves, and the powerpoints and other materials I saw them creating seemed to bear this out.
