AP Human Geography Study Thread

I figured since all the other ap subjects had their own thread, we should start one and our exam is less than 48 hours.

Let me start off by asking the first question:
What are hinterlands?

The outside portions of urban areas. (all I can think of)

What type of industry is copper?
a) Bulk-gaining
B) Bulk-reducing
C) Refined
D) Basic
E) Non-basic

It is B) Bulk Reducing(Final product weighs less than input).

Hinterland also means market area of a city.
Relatively isolated cities have bigger hinterlands such as Atlanta or Calgary.

Worst bad boy, what review guide are you reviewing from?

Also, next question.

What is the main idea or concept behind Von Thunen's model?

rampreddy, I am reviewing from barrons and Rubenstein's human geography. I also went over the vocab words compiled by collegeboard (On Apcentral)

To answer your question:
The model is based on several generilizations
-Land values decrease as you move away from the city.
-Land Qualities, such as soil type, remain constant throughout the landscape.
-Farms are located to increase yield per acre or profitability.

The model itself states that:
-things that are more expensive to transport or easily perishable are located closer to the market. (eg.milk)
-things that are less expensive to transport are located farther away from the city.(eg.cheese)
-develops in series of rings
-inner rings - things like fruits are grown here
-outer rings- grain production and grazing occurs here.

That's all I can remember form the top of my head. I also took the released exam and got 59/74 questions right. Is that more likea 4 or a 5?

Next question:
List stages of demographic transition model.

That is definitely tilting on the 5 side, because 70 points is a 5 for the released exam.

I got 50/74 right on the released test.

Demographic Transition has 4 stages.

Stage 1: Somewhat High birth and Death rates
Stage 2: High Birth rates, low death rates
Stage 3: Somewhat High birth but low death rates
Stage 4: Low birth and low death rates (zero growth)

Next Question:
The "I" House originated from which part of North America?

By the way, how do you view vocab on AP central.
I am there right now, but I am unable to click on the PDF files, so can you maybe send me a link, or tell me how to do it worst bad boy.

Thanks

The "I" house was introduced by the middle atlantic settlers. I remember going over it in the rubenstein book.

The link is:
http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/members/article/1,3046,151-165-0-49389,00.html
You can click on each one of those to view the words.

And by the way what resources are you using?

Next question(almost forgot): Name a couple of reasons that might be responsible for forced migration.

I am using Barron's, Rubenstein study guide, and Mcgraw Hill Human Geo.

The link brought me to sections of vocab, but there was nothing I could click on for the PDF files.

How are you able to view them?

Question:

What is the largest language family in the world?
Hint: Comprises about 50% of all people

It is the Indo European language family. Went over it in my rubenstein text book.

What is the rubenstein study guide? Is it like a summary of the text book.

Ap central: that's interesting. do u have the latest version of adobe reader. That might be a problem because It was really easy for me. I just had to click on it. -). Try googling for the vocab list.

Next Question: What is balance of power?

Occurred during the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

Did you read the whole Rubenstein book?
The study guide basically is just a summary of the book.

I am really nervous for this test because I think it will be hard.

Found the vocab words, but there are no definitions, so you have to search them.

Didn't you think that the Barron's test was much easier than the released exam.

Next Question:

What is the difference between a basic and a non-basic sector (I don't know the answer)?

Yes, I read the whole book except the last chapter(totally irrelevant)
The book is comprehensive but is really good and yes for the definitions you have to search them, it is not that hard though.(use wikipedia).

Well on the barron's test i got 63/75 and on the released test i got 59/74(I took the test when my mind was really inactive. When i went over the test i disovered that i misread 2 answers. Hopefully on the real test I will get 62/75). I thought the Barron's test was much easier too. But don't worry if you know the basic concepts u will be able to get a 5. I also think that u r taking AP world. Studying for that will help u a lot.

Basic service: exporting stuff, get money from other community. (eg. steel mill, automobie factory)
Non basic service: sell to people in your own community. Money is circulated inside(local grocery store).
Together these make up the economic base.

Next Question: What is a swidden?

The land left due to slash-burn-agriculture.

I got 67/75 on Barron's Test #1, but did not do that well the released exam.

Next Question: Explain Rostow's stages of economic development?

Do you know any websites or online tests for Human Geo?

Stage 1: basic society
Stage 2: Preconditions to take off (discovery of economic asset)
Stage 3: Take off(foreign funds pour in and jumpstart economy)
Stage 4: Drive to Maturity
Stage 5: High mass consumption

I am writing this based on my memory so please correct me if I am wrong.
And Ram,67/75 is pretty good. What did you get on the 2001 released exam?
Are you self studying for this exam?

Next question: Name the universializing Religions.

Also, what is the difference between clustered/agglomerated.

For your second quetion McGraw hill and RubenStein each have quizzes on specific chapters

Agglomeration and clustered are basically the same things except that clustered is broad and agglomeration refers to Industries.

Agglomeration: refers to places where all the production centers of the same industry are located(Silicon Valley)
Clustered: when a feature of the landscape is concentrated in one area

In 1995, the US had a higher crude death rate than Mexico because they
A. are larger countries
B. received more immigrants
C. Had more elderly ppl
D. Had a Higher standard of living
E. Spent more on health care
