Ap, Ib Classes!

Hey I noticed on many of the specific university forum things, where people say if they got in and their stats, that most people have around 3 or 4 AP classes/scores.
How many AP courses are you guys taking and what colleges are you applying to? also any applicable AP exam scores? I am a Junior but anyone should post.

Thanks I took/am taking
AP Euro-3
AP Chemistry (not taking the exam)
AP Psychology
AP Government
AP Literature
AP Statistics
AP Language
AP US History
AP Physics

Applying to NYU and Georgetown

hey I think this is a good thread....because either people are not listing all their AP scores, or a lot of people are only taking 3 or 4 AP's...SO anyone...

Computer science A 5
Chemistry 4 You should take the exam its not that bad.

This year classes
Physics C
Calc BC
Computer science AB - spending the rest of the year making a sodoku solver

Self study
Stats - have class
Econ both - brother is an econ major
European history - brothers friend majors in this, and is back from Christmas break.

Courses not taken APs (offered at school)
Spanish, us + world history, Bio, English.
I could have taken the 2 englishs and world history, the rest would not fit.

i don't know about other schools, but mine usually doesn't offer AP classes until senior year. In fact, there are 3 exceptions i can think of - AP gov if you choose to do IB (u don't graudate otherwise), AP comp sci and AP stat because they're both electives and u can take them any time u want. also, if u too classes ahead of time, u can take AP's junior year. Otherwise, tought luck

but my school does offer IB diploma

so yeah. if u really want to know, i got a 4 on gov and a 5 comp sci A (no AB at our school) and a 6 on econ sl....

Okay, not too many APs, but you did mention IBs...

I have taken:

AP US Gov.
IB Psychology
IB Math Studies-the weak math, but whateva!!!
IB English 11
IB European History
IB Theory of Knowledge-Semester 1
IB Spanish V
IB Bio I

Am Taking:

IB Bio II
IB English 12
IB 20th Century Topics
IB Theory of Knowledge-Semester 2
AP Statistics
IB Spanish VI

Sorry for my ignorance...but what exactly is the difference between an AP and an IB? I heard IB is a little easier, and the Exam Scale is like 1-7 or something? My school has no IB classes available.

Advanced placement tests give college credit and are widely recognized in American universities/colleges. IB consists of an international 2 year program for the IB diploma, which while not as recognized as AP in the US, is recognized worldwide. You don't have to be in the program to take IB classes but heck, I say just go after the diploma. Unfortunately, some schools do not even recognize IB credit.

As for whether AP or IB is harder...I would say IB. I mean while it is a 2 year program there are a lot of requirements to get the IB Diploma. I had to take PIB classes in 9-10th, internal/external assessments, write many papers, Extended Essay of approx 4000 words, at least 150 Creativity-Action-Service hours, a Group project, and an IB elective. Just this week I turned in my TOK essay...I am now working on the History Internal Assessment. Then again, I am only basing this off of the 2 AP classes I took-I am not sure what they do in AP Calc or AP Psych.

So the IB Diploma is something you can pursue independant from HS? If so, how?

i think AP classes and tests are harder INDIVIDUALLY, but as a whole, the IB DIPLOMA program is much harder.

no, your school must offer IB in order for you to take IB classes. that's because you're required to sit in on a certain number of hours in their prescribed classes before you're allowed to take the IB exams.

i think the poster was referring to how you can take IB classes if your school offers it, even if you're not officially enrolled in the diploma/certificate programs (each has their own set of classes that you have to take).

FULL IB !!!! School offers no AP classes
IB Social Anthropology SL = 6
IB English HL
IB History of the Americas HL
IB Spanish HL
IB Physics HL
IB Math Methods SL

I would say IB is harder, not question about it. The tests themselves might not be, but to get the diploma, u have to do so many other things listed by shaddix. Plus, for all the tests u have internals assessments and essays that make it a pain.

I LOVE IB

j/k, but I don't know what I'd do without it.

interesting....is IB a coastal thing? kinda like the SAT...wheras the ACT (and maybe AP?) is a lot more popular in the midwest and southern states (I am in St. Louis)

redwing: Sorry I wasn't clear...kfc4u is right.

gcards- I will love IB even more when I have that diploma in my hands. :)

ahh ok that helps. thanks! anything else about number of these classes versus what school applying to?

doesnt look like many schools in missouri offers it

http://www.ibo.org/ibo/index.cfm?page=/ibo/services/ib_worldschool/school_dir&language=EN&&country=UNITED%20STATES&programme=DIPLOMA&region=IBNA&SCHOOL_ADDRESS=&methode=search&order=4,5

Oh yeah!!! Forgot about that part...

I will be applying to:

UVA
Boston U
NYU
U of Penn
Stanford- I will more than likely get rejected but I don't want to go through my life wondering what if...

Possibly applying to U of Mich- Ann Arbor

Yeah I definitely hear ya. You've got some similar schools to me.. I used to aspire to stanford but it is too far from the political arena, for me. I might apply to Yale just to say, what the heck? And, to lower their admissions stats juuuust a little more lol.

I agree...better to apply. It would kill me everyday if I didn't. I am the type of person who will dwell on things...so I have to do this to get it out of my mind.

hahaha yeah

The debate will never be resolved, but I vote that IB is more difficult. I've taken four AP tests but have all 6 of my IB exams waiting for me in May. I'm much more worried about my IB tests. Another point, HL IB tests are based on two years of study, while AP's are based on one. Example...I took the AP Chem exam last year, got a 5, am now back in chem class in preparation for IB Chem HL.

The general thought among IB kids is that IB exams are easier to pass, but that it is much easier to get a 5 on an AP test than it is to get a 7 on an IB test.
