I am debating on taking AP Lang or Honors English 11 next year as a junior with all of the other things I have going on. What’s the class like? Amount of homework? Time-consuming? Interesting? Personally, I love writing but I am not the best reader… Will this class help or tear me down? Thanks!
Go for AP Lang. It’s not too bad.
It’s a lot of writing. You should like it if you enjoy crafting essays! I definitely learned a lot.
AP Lang. It’s a lot of writing, but it’s worth it because it’s a really good college prep course. Unlike other APs (government, psych, stats, etc) everyone needs to take English courses in college.
The amount of HW depends on your teacher, but I would expect a lot of writing assignments. If you like writing I think you will find it at least somewhat interesting. It should also help improve your reading skills as well.
I would 110% take AP Lang over Honors, though.
I’m in AP lang right now and like the people above have mentioned, it’s really helpful for writing which I assume will help a lot in college. We do a lot of essays, about one big one out of school a term and a few small out of school ones and then about 2 in class essays, which are pretty hard. We focus very little on reading- over break I had to read a whole book and then we talked about it for a day. I would definitely suggest it if you like writing. Homework takes about 1-2 hours a night, and most of it is busywork in my opinion. In class we mainly discuss pieces of writing like essays, poems, etc. as a class. Hope this helps!
As others have said, it’s a lot of writing, which will not only help you in college and in life, but will be invaluable as you start to write your college essays. I’d recommend it.
do you debate in the class? is it mostly argumentative essays?
There are three essay types that we write, rhetorical analysis, synthesis, and argumentative. We are about to have an informal debate in my class to prepare for our argumentative essays, but it depends on the teacher I think. In my class we only analyze non-fiction, no poems or anything. We analyze fiction in AP Lit in my school.
