As said in my previous topic, i’m scheduling for next year. I have a choice between AP Lang or H.E. 11.
I’ve had an A/A- in english this year.
My weaknesses are Vocabulary (Memorizing the word, deffinition, syn., ant., and part of speech is just too much for me) and grammar packets (I don’t know why but i’m just terrible at them).
I’m decent at writing essays, even more now that I’m taking APUSH (Usually get A’s and B’s on them).
I will already be taking 3 other AP classes, 2 extremely hard ones (AP chem and calc ab), so that’s also something to consider.
AP Lang is mostly about memorizing/knowing literary terms, but not much other vocabulary. Though technically you do not need it for the exam, it really does help.
We have a Great Gatsby essay coming up in HE 10 in a couple weeks or a month. I think i’ll decide on what I want to go with depending on how I do on the essay.
I’m AP this year. I have the easy teacher at my school so my opinions are a bit skewed. The class hasn’t been too bad. We’re always reading a book and we write a lot of in-class essays. It’s a lot different from honors English classes. But it’s really helpful for learning how to write well, and it’s probably one of the most important classes to take in high school.
I’d go with Honors English 11. My opinion is biased because I don’t really like English much, but I think you should pick what you can handle. If you can handle Honors English 11, then try it. If you think you can handle AP Lang, then do it. I just really HATE analyzing text, and I’m pretty bad at it, so English isn’t my forte.
Ask your current English teacher: does s/he think you can get an A in AP English Language? (Or nothing below a B?) If the answer’s no to “not below a B”, pick HE11. It also depends on what kind of college you’re aiming for: your state flagship (provided it’s not UMich or UCB/LA or UVA/W&M)? Or any university/LAC ranked in the top 25? Because AP English Language, unlike AP Lit, is pretty much a stapple for very to highly selective university admissions.
AP Language is structured more like a college class. The AP teacher said that there is no group projects or group work or partners. They won’t accept late work.
In Honors English, it’s more fun and is more like a High School class. Their are a lot of projects and group work and you have partners. You can also turn in things late. It’s by far easier.
