***AP Latin Thread 2015-2016***

I started this threat because there wasn’t an already existing one. I’ve looked for good prep books all year but there don’t seem to be any. How are you guys preparing for the exam?

Hi Everyone!! Haven’t seen a thread for this yet (maybe I’m wrong?) but the AP is near!! What are you all doing to prepare?

Salve sunrise reader et dreamatcha

I know, I know, the exam is fast approaching, but just thought I’d throw out my two sesterces.

Bad news: I can’t recommend one book as an AP Latin review.

Good news: There are still tons of great resources for getting a five. I don’t know how effective any of these are for, say, last-minute cramming, but they are things that you can use in the last couple weeks of preparation.

tabney.com (http://www.tabney.com/aeneid.html)
Is Awesome (mostly prep for the aeneid, but very comprehensive, including quizzes that will prepare you for the types of questions you’ll see on the exam, and all kinds of great things to review).

If you were going to buy a book, you could invest the $25 in the upgrade that gives you access to the answers, explanations, and difficult questions. They’re mostly on Caesar’s Gallic Wars (they added the Virgil part just this year, you lucky students), but at least that nicely complements the tabney.com practice.

Also, you’re going to take other tests besides this AP in the course of your high school career, right? learnerator has excellent resources for lots of others too.

I’ll you presume you already own some Latin grammar books (Henle’s separate Latin grammar book is excellent, dividing and organizing the concepts and 201 Latin verbs is something great for reviewing irregulars).
Don’t worry, you won’t be asked to use the pluperfect passive subjunctive in a sentence, but grammar review for improved comprehension helps.

Ultimately, your ability to grasp what you’re reading, recognize its purpose (and devices for accomplishing that) and your ability to put it into context (literary or historical) is what you’re being tested on.

All the best to you and your exam endeavors!

@MsStudious Ago gratias! Thank you for your excellent recommendations!

I’ll actually be taking the exam late, on the 20th, because of a school conflict. Once my other APs and my finals are over, I’ll have 10 days to intensively study Latin. I am definitely going to use these resources.

@sunrisereader @MsStudious Thanks for the suggestions!! I feel fairly prepared for the Vergil and Caesar sections, as my class has gone over the syllabus intensively, but the sight passages/multiple choice is more worrying, because I haven’t been doing so well on those practice tests… Guess I should just keep practicing!

I’d say full immersion is a good idea. Surround yourself with people speaking nothing else and you will progress more than studying it out of a book! Even better, if you can spend a week there and not speak English, well that would be the quickest way to learn.

@dreamatcha Me too! I’m probably most worried about that and vocabulary. My teacher gave me a huge stack of Vergil notecards so that should be fun :expressionless:

Content, essays, and scansion will hopefully be ok. What practice tests have you been using? And best of luck studying!

@sunrisereader good luck to you too! latin’s my only AP left so gonna study really hard these next few days. my teacher gave me a vergil workbook so i’m gonna work through that, I do pretty well on the in class essays but really hope they’re on easy passages, haha.

i’ve practiced with the FRQ’s on the college board website, and my teacher gave me some practice multiple choice packets.

How’d you guys do?? @sunrisereader ? And will you be taking Latin V next year?

@dreamatcha 4, thanks for asking! Just happy I passed since it was a tough class. How about you?

And no, my school only offers up to AP, which is actually fifth year latin. There were only two of us in AP this year and the other one just graduated so it’s just me left. I might do some in Latin in college though. Will you be continuing with Latin?

@sunrisereader 5, but only because my school takes its Latin track record seriously and my latin teacher went sooo hard in the class. Not sure if it was even worth all that pain. It sounds kinda fun to be in a 2 person class!
We luckily have Latin 5 at our school, but I’m excited to take college Latin too
