So I have a dilemma for my schedule next year. I really wanted to take AP chem but switched to AP physics 1 as it is a grad requirement (taking AP chem should waiver it but it doesn’t). Now I have to decide if I want to add AP chem back to my schedule and take it concurrently with AP physics 1 (same year). To do this I would have to hold AP gov for senior year (gov is also a grad requirement at my school)
Here’s my junior year schedule (*=grad requirement)
- AP chem or AP gov?
- AP phsyics 1
- AP english language *
- AP capstone seminar ***
- AP macro/micro*
- precalculus honors*
- theatre
***ap capstone seminar- senior project is grad requirement at my school and this course lets u not take regular senior project class senior year (so grad requirement ish)
So overall should I take AP chem + AP physics or AP gov+ AP physics? Thoughts on schedule?
Honestly, I’d dump AP capstone and just to the regular senior project, allowing you to take both AP Gov and AP Chem, if desired.
@skieurope
Yeah but guidance has pushed ap capstone and really won’t let me out of it.
Out of the two which one should I take junior year and which one should i take junior year?
Another thing is i kinda want to take ap chemistry next year so I don’t have to take it concurrently with ap calc ab senior year
Well, here’s my thought - I don’t understand AP Capstone, and more to the point, neither do most colleges, since you’re unlikely to get credit for it. IMO AP Capstone is the CB’s attempt to imitate the IB TOK/EE curriculum, and for whatever reason, many HS’s (like yours) have drunk the Kool-Aid, as is obvious in that your GC is pushing it. But here’s the thing, your GC should be advising with the student’s interests in mind, and if my GC ever tried to pull a stunt like not letting me out of a class for next year, you better believe my non-tiger-parent parents would get involved.
Having said that, if you really want to take AP Capstone, then go for it. It really makes no difference in the long-run if you take AP Chem as a junior and AP gov as a senior, or vice versa Flip a coin, if it come to that.
Actually, it does if you intend to take the Chem SAT2 exam. I don’t know what AP capstone is either, nor why it coudn’t be taken as a senior. You will be busy with college applications as a senior and might appreciate the easier AP Gov class then. Doesn’t AP chem require physics as a prerequisite? If so, it seems unwise to ignore that.
I assumed (and I know what happens when you assume ) that the OP had a prior chem course. Despite what some of these teens here believe, one does not need AP Chem to do well on that SAT subject test.
AP Capstone is a 2 year sequence, so it has to be started as a junior.
While HS policies will vary, no physics is needed.
One other thing for the OP that I should mention. The workload in AP Chem will be much, much higher than in AP Gov. Given that your senior fall will also have a hidden class called “College Apps and Essays” it might be more advantageous to get the more intensive course out of the way first.
