This year at my school a lot (and I mean A LOT) of upperclassmen took AP Psych hoping it would be an easy AP class, but a lot of them failed due to the fact that most of them are not the brightest students and I doubt ever even took an honors class. Because of this, my school added a regular, non-honors and non-AP Psychology as a prerequisite for AP Psych. I actually have an interest in psychology, even though that isn't what I'm going to study in college, and I was going to take AP my senior year. I don't want to take a regular class because it will effect my weighted GLA, and I don't even have room for it in my schedule.

So, do you think my school could possibly make an exception for me? Like if I took a test or something to pass out of the prerequisite maybe?

Why don’t you just self-study for it? If you read a Barron’s book through, that’s all you need. I read a Barron’s book 3 days before the test last year and got an easy 5 (and I’m not a good test taker…I got a 4 and a 3 on my other AP tests that year).

Maybe… I just thought I would enjoy taking the class as a fun class for senior year. I love reading about different psychological experiments and theories. They interest me a lot and that basically is what the class is: just talking about experiments and theories.

If you have good grades in English and science, you could probably try, I see no reason why you need a pre-req (we don’t have a pre-req at my school and people do just fine). You could also consider dual enrollment.

Yea they never had a prerequisite before. This is the first year they decided to add it, which, in my opinion, is dumb on their part considering my school tries so hard to get their students to take as many APs as possible. But my school isn’t very smart considering they don’t even let us take APs until we are juniors.

My school used to have prerequisites for every AP class, and only upperclassmen could take AP. I kind of caught them at an awkward time when the district was going through tons of policy changes, graduation requirement changes, shifting from a block schedule to 8 period day, etc. Basically no one knew what was going on and I convinced my consoler to put me in AP World History as a sophomore without the prereq. And I’m so glad because I think it’s one if the best classes I’ve ever taken, but it got reformed and would be very different if I had to take honors first. So it’s definitely worth a shot to talk to your consoler and see what he/she can do. Maybe if your gpa is great and your teachers recommend you then they’ll let you in. And the best thing you can do is get your parents involved because then they have to give you what you want. (<-- advice from my teachers haha)
