Bloomy and MaVitale-Same boat here with respect to six SUNY Stony Brook credits for French. It’s as if Tulane knew she STILL can’t speak French :)

Bloomy-thanks about the 4+1 note. I’ll take a look at that. DS is taking Finance too (at least right now). Wonder if our sons will be in some of the same classes?

Does anyone know how to decipher the Physic B credit? DS took this and scored high enough for credit, but it isn’t showing up on Gibson.

This is one of those all or nothing deals. i.e. a 4 or 5 on the AP test gives you the same result, 8 credit hours and placement out of the first two semesters of Introductory Physics (1210 and 1220), which is for non-majors so that works out very well for your son.

Just for the sake of others reading this who might have a different situation: If he was a physics or engineering major it wouldn’t help him as far as placing out of courses because majors have to take the somewhat more rigorous 1310/1320 sequence. Of course having taken the AP Physics B, most students would still find those courses much easier. But to place out of those higher level courses one has to get a 4 or 5 in both semesters of Physics C.

But back to your son’s situation, if you are saying he got a 4 or 5 then he should get 8 credits. If it doesn’t show up on Gibson sometime next week, just have him call academic advising and they can track it down. Perhaps he forgot to have his scores sent to Tulane, or put in the wrong school code by mistake? Anyway, it should be fairly easily rectified.

I hesitate to bring this up, since going for a masters under this program will be 4 years out for these students, and things could change by then. But someone brought to my attention that not all 4+1 programs have the same discount in that 5th year. Liberal Arts and Science/Engineering appear to have the steepest discounts, Business less so. But there may be details associated with specific programs I am not seeing, and again 4 years out who knows what the situation will be. The original point was and still is that having credit hours in the bank maximizes flexibility for the future, whatever that future may look like.

We’re going to check this out.

Hi Bloomy and others with kids in the B school who got AP stats credits, unfortunately even though the credits show up in Gibson you can’t use them and your kid will still have to take stats again, but the good news is that it should be an way A.

Thanks for the heads up mumof2. I wound up taking Stats three different time in my academic career, so no surprise here. Digging deeper into the course advising fine print.

The adviser DS had during Honors Weekend was very helpful to setup an interesting schedule.

The Stats that the business school kids take is a different course from the Stats taken in the AP class which is also offered in the Math department at Tulane. I would think that they would be able to use the 3 credit hours which are for Math 1110 even though they will still have to take Math 1140 (Bstat). Not positive about that though.

I knew the Stat class didn’t sub for the B school stat class - I just hope he gets credit for some other class…

I think credit is credit. So even though they still have to take Bstats, they should still get credit for the AP score. After all, Tulane doesn’t really know going in what their major is. Even after they declare, the credit counts. Now whether it ends up being more than an academic issue (no pun intended) will depend on their eventual choice of major and the requirements thereof.

Well the list on the website definitely says they get three hours credit for Math 1110.

Unfortunately, I don’t think that a student can get credit for both MATH 1110 and MATH 1140, even using AP credit. The catalog says that “[s]tudents may receive credit for only one of MATH 1110, 1140 or 1230”. My daughter had AP credit for MATH 1110 but had to take MATH 1230 for her major and had to forfeit the AP credit.

I forgot to say that my daughter’s advisor said that she could keep the MATH 1110 credit from her AP score until she took MATH 1230. Then the advisor deleted the AP credit. My daughter said that the system would not give her credit for the MATH 1230 until the AP was gone. Anyway, a student can keep the MATH 1110 credit until he or she takes a different stats course.

Ah! You’re right! Glad S2 didn’t listen to me when I told him to take AP Stat last year!

Looks like my son has received 4 credits for French!

*formerly known as ExeterMama :-)

Love the new name!

Thanks Kat! I was a bit bummed that I couldn’t just change my username. Had to create a whole new account! :-(

Woohoo! 36 credit hours down >:-)

If I can get a B or better in all my German classes this semester, I can study abroad all of sophomore year and have something good to put on my CV earlier! :D

Wow!! That is the most I have heard of yet. Congrats!! Mind listing what you got all the credits in? No reason, really. Just curious.

Thanks! Here’s a breakdown:

AP Bio got me 3 credit hours for CELL 1030 (Heredity and Society), 1 credit for CELL 1035 (Heredity and Society Lab), and 4 more for EBIO 1010/1015 (Diversity of Life + Lab), for 8 credit hours total.

AP English (either Lang or Lit; you can only use one) got me 4 credit hours for English 1010.

AP German got me 4 credit hours for German 2030.

AP Euro got me 3 credit hours for HISE 1220 (Emerg Cont World 1789).

APUSH got me 3 credit hours for HISU 1420 (US Hist 1865 To The Present).

Calc BC got me 8 credit hours, 4 each for Math 1210 and Math 1220 (Calc I and II, respectively).

AP US Gov got me 3 for POLA 2100 (American Government).

AP Comp Gov got me 3 for POLC 2300 (Comparative Politics).

I got 5s on all the exams I took and got credit for all of them except one of the two English exams. The only course where getting a 5 over a 4 was to my advantage was, to my knowledge, Bio, since I read somewhere that a 4 gets only 4 credit hours, whereas the 5 gets all 8.
