Hi everyone, I know that the question of AP scores’ effect on admissions has been asked a lot, but I wanted to ask specifically about my scores.
I go to an extremely competitive and well-known high school, lots and lots of kids go to elite colleges each year, so it is not a lesser known school
My scores through junior year have been thus:
AP Bio: 5
APES: 5
AP AB: 5
APUSH: 5
AP Chem: 3
AP Macro: 5
AP Micro: 5
I’m a very poor chemistry student and I also had a pretty bad chemistry teacher this year. I was just wondering if the 3 on the exam will affect my chances of admissions at top schools? My target right now is Duke ED. I also want to get in other schools like Cornell, UNC, UVA, Wash U, etc.
Also I took the class so I can’t really choose not to submit the score.
Thank you everyone!
No, AP scores really aren’t important at all in terms of admission, esp. not compared to SATs, ACTs, and SAT IIs! They’re mainly important for getting college credit, and not much else. A 3 is a passing score, anyway.
I really don’t think the 3 will hurt much, especially given that it comes alongside all of those 5s. AP scores probably won’t keep you out of anything unless they’re pretty bad, and yours look good.
Congratulations, these are great scores. My D is at Cornell and they only will accept a 5 on the Chemistry in order to get placed into a higher level class.
Hijacking the thread to ask @TiggyB62 a quick question: My daughter just found out that she got a 5 on the Chem so does that alone get you out of the intro class or would you have to take a placement exam? Where would I find this on Cornell’s website? Thanks!
@uesmomof2 I sent you a PM
Hi, paranoid high schooler here. Sorry to prolong this discussion, but does one low AP score (a 3) serve as a large hindrance to admissions to schools like UVA, JHU, WashU, and some low-tier Ivies? I’ve done well on my other APs (three 5’s and three 4’s), have good SAT scores, GPA, extracurriculars, accolades, and volunteering. Thanks!
