Hi. I am aiming for some of the IVY league schools and other top privates such as Duke, Johns Hopkins, etc.
How important are the ap exam scores?
Do i need to get 4-5 at the very least?
I am taking 5 aps this year and im slightly concerned about one of the subject.

anyone? lolllllll

Look at each school’s website, it should list what credit or placement (if any) it will give for each score.

Schools don’t use AP exam scores for admissions. I got into Cornell early this year and that’s what they told me. It’s only used for after u get accepted to determine the amount of credits you can get. The classes look good so make sure you do well in ur classes, but for the exam itself, your grade really doesn’t matter, you don’t even have to take it.

x3xkimiex3x is right. Though it’s ridiculously stupid, schools don’t look at the scores you get on the tests.

It’s important to note, however, that if you self-studied and got good AP scores, it could help you in the admissions process. Just be sure to weave it in your app somehow.

Do you have evidence of this for schools other than Cornell, kimie?

I got a 2 on English Language and I am going to Northwestern next year. Colleges don’t look at your AP scores much since you don’t send your scores from Collegeboard during admissions.

Can anyone confirm these claims? I’m sincerely interested.

1-2 3’s won’t kill you.

You do, however, want to do as well as you possibly can. If you get a 2 on the AP but have an A in the class, that says (negative) stuff about your school’s curriculum. If you get a 4 or 5 on the AP but have a B in the class, the college will likely ignore the grade.

thnx guys. anybody else?

I doubt they care that much. You can not take it or even cancel it if you don’t do well… So what would be the point to consider that? They care about how well you do in the class, not one three hour exam… Relax and try your best.

The fact of the matter is that AP’s are worth nothing, at least for admissions. If you do not show them they dont really matter! For admissions SAT Subject Tests> AP Score + the grade you get in that class> AP Score. I had a 4,4 on two AP’s Junior year and managed to get into Wharton, Duke, Northwestern, Dartmouth, Brown! My friend had lower scores and got into Stanford. However if you have a lot of AP’s definitely show then off they could work in your favor, they can actually complement your grades in that actual class!

So grades in an AP class matter more then your final score. Your SAT Subjects matter more then your AP score, at least for admissions!
