I want to be an entrepreneur, so I’m looking at colleges that fit the whole business, entrepreneur vibe. Any suggestions would be great, as I am still researching colleges. Anyways, I’m currently in AP Calc AB and it’s not difficult, but AP Stats would be easier as well as less time consuming. Do colleges care about which one I take? I can switch into Stats, and I will do that unless colleges prefer to see Calc, then I’ll stay. So, should I stay or should I go? Thank you!
Stats is considered easier, but unless you’re aiming for the top 20 schools, it won’t matter if you choose it over stats. Stats probably will help you more in your career goals as well.
I am valedictorian with good SAT scores and lots of extracurricular stuff; so far I’ve seen Babson Uni. and Johnson & Wales Uni., but I want to look at bigger schools too. So maybe it would matter…
Yes, stats is a gut. Take calc BC.
gut? I’m sticking with AB if anything, though I could take BC but would rather not.
It wouldn’t matter, in that case. All your other stats are great.
Also, ‘stats is a gut’? Oh please. It seems people on this site take this process a little too seriously. No college is going to reject you for not taking calculus.
I saw a college site saying they look for students who have taken calculus as a bullet point for things they look for. I don’t remember which college it is, but it was a pretty good one.
As I said, in the top 20, maybe. But for mid-range schools you’re looking into? Nah. Heck, I got into this tier of schools without even taking pre calculus (I actually opted for AP Stats instead) and got accepted into all of them with scholarships, if you could believe it.
Are you looking at any in state public schools?
I don’t think I am. I’m behind on college research, but so far it’s mostly private schools.
It probably would be beneficial for you to apply to 1 or 2 public schools- most state flagships are pretty respectable, cheaper, and easier to get into.
I’m taking both BC and Stats and right now stats is harder for me.
Babson will want to see Calculus if you had the opportunity of taking it. AP Stats is NOT equivalent to college statistics and is a class you can take as a complement to calc (if you really like math) or as your math class if you can’t take calculus. In addition, taking statistics is relevant for college because it’s actually a class you’ll want to be able to claim on your resume. (Employers do not care that you took stats in HS, they do care you took one or two semesters of it in college.)
Beside Babson, I assume you’re applying to Bentley and Bryant, plus your instate flagship’s business schools and honors college.
Having calculus won’t make or break your application for colleges ranked like Bryant. For Bentley it’ll help you snatch some scholarship money because it’s top rigor for math. For Babson, though, it’ll be more or less expected considering your choice of majors and that it’s offered at your school. Some students can get by applying with precalculus honors only, but only if they didn’t have a chance to take calc or are applying to a major that won’t require calc or are applying to a non flagship or university/LAC ranked 60-125.
