i agree.

i agree.

Do precal over the summer. Most applicants to the top 20 schools all have taken Calculus in their senior year, at the least.

It will seriously hurt your application not to do so.

is it really bad if you don't take calculus senior year??? he'll be in all other AP classes, it's just in math he didn't know about the accelerated courses freshman year so he's kind of stuck with it and on this plan you normally take pre-cal your senior year

from what im hearing, ill suggest pre-cal for him. thanks for all the responses so far! wow, i didnt expect so many lol.

no he needs to take both, but if he is applying to top 20 schools then they expect him to have taken atleast some form of calculus in high school, especially if it is offered. so he should take precalc over the summer and then take calc senior year with stat if possible

i think your brother should take precalc over the summer and AP Calc/honors calc senior year. if he really wants to go to a top college, this would undoubtedly be the best choice.

also..precalc is senior year for the average highschooler believe it or not and junior year for the standard Honors students(not like a lot of you). Of course you can take it in sophomore year but by no means is that the norm at all.

i took precalc, then calc AB, and now calc BC. i knew that i would not be stimulated by or interested in stat, but i find that calculus holds my attention. i don't particularly love math, but there is a lot of analytical thinking/problem solving in calc... i think stat is a lot more cookie-cutter straightforward.

ive heard that u dont really need precalc for stats. idk but thats true in my school, u can just skip it and take ap stats. id go for ap stats b/c precalc is boring. nothing fun

^Yea, it is boring, but it's algebra. What do you expect? lol

Still, Precalc is very helpful for Calculus.

If you are applying to a top 20 school, especially in the ivy league, you really need AP Calculus. I'd say 95% or more students entering the Ivy League have taken Calculus in their highschool.

would it have to be AP or does Honors Calculus look good...just wondering?

I just have a question for everyone who says you need Calculus to get into a top 20 school -

Colleges don't look at your freshman grades, right? Or at least, they don't count as much as your other grades.

Well, I dunno how it works at other schools, but at mine, you have to be selected to take 8th grade math in 7th grade to be able to take Calculus your senior year, while taking the normal math sequence. And taking Calculus your junior year has to do with how well you did on a test in 6th grade.

Should tests you take in 6th or 7th grade matter in college admissions?

umm no but 99% of the time you should really have Calculus.sorry:D

Uh, actually I will have Calculus. But I think it's really weird that tests that you take in 6th and 7th grade decide whether you get into college or not. Especially when people say that freshman grades don't count for much.

shravas that's exactly how it works at our school too...except he didnt take that test because he didnt know about it in the first place

You can always take math courses over the summer to compensate for stupid school administrations.

Colleges care if you used the most of your school resources, ergo, if your school offers Calculus, you better have taken it. When applying with a pool of students who have all taken it, these colleges will notice.

haha i talked to him about summer school and he was like,

"are you kiddin me???? heckk nooo!!!!"

sorry, but who wants to take pre-cal during the summer? plus he could be doing more extra curricular stuff
