I spend time on my phone for about 15-30 minutes just to give myself a little break from the school day, and after that I go run. I’m a distance runner, and not only does it help me train but it totally frees up my mind and makes me feel like I can accomplish a lot more. I feel more alert, aware, and able to do tasks more productively whereas when I don’t run I have a hard time getting motivated to do homework as I have a mental barrier between my homework and I. After a run, I try and crank out some of my homework before dinner, then after dinner I finish the rest. On a good night I can be in bed before 10pm, but most nights I am up until 11pm-midnight. My parents think that it’s crazy as I have to wake up at 6:40 on a school day, but I have honestly gotten used to lesser amounts of sleep. Not that it’s ideal or anything (I would honestly kill to sleep at least 8 hours a day) but it doesn’t tax me anymore like it used to.
My pieces of advice for you since you say you’re feeling pretty unproductive when you get home are to
A) try and fit in at least 20 minutes of exercise. It doesn’t need to be vigorous, just something that will losen up your body after sitting in desks for several hours. This will also release endorphines, improve mental awareness, self-satisfaction, the list goes on! There are so many benefits to exercising.
B) when doing homework, make a sacrifice and tell yourself that you will not get distracted. Though it is annoying, I put my phone away in another room when I have a lot of homework to get done. This doesn’t completely stop me from thinking about it, but it removes the possibility of me taking a grab for my phone and accidentally wasting 20 minutes or so of time on social media.
Luckily I don’t get too much homework from my AP teacher, but she makes up for that with tests and quizzes…
But for other homework loads, I usually procrastinate before doing my work. I’ve been trying to get better at it. It usually takes me about an hour or two to start my homework after I get home. (Netflix, friends and Twitter take up my time too much—) I usually sleep around 10:30-11:30. Depends on the day and if there is a test the next day or not.
Wow, seems as though you guys are super productive. I ought to better manage my team. I’m in 5 AP classes but when I get home, I get straight to sleeping and procrastinating haha.
@AverageTeen2000 loll same, I’m also taking 5 and I usually sleep when I get home lmao, I’m so bad with procrastinating and getting work done. I usually only end up doing one homework assignment a night then BSing then rest in class or just winging it. I needa start trying harder :-S
I usually got home from practice around 5:15. Then I fall asleep till about 7:30. Then I wake up and shower and eat dinner, talk to the fam, etc (this ends about 9). Then I go watch tv/play on my phone till about 10. Think about starting my homework for 1/2 hour. And hen start homework at 10:30 and finish before midnight usually. I wake up he next day at 6:40. If I have a game, I get home around 10:00 and then just eat, shower, and do homework and go to bed about 1 am
Virtually nothing. I surf the internet and enjoy my free time. It’s amazing what you can get done if you make it a habit to stay one or two hours after school everyday. Occasionally, I have the odd essay/project to do at home, but that’s once a week at most.
A good piece of advice I’ve been told is “there’s always time in each day to do the activities you enjoy the most.” If you ever find yourself too busy, take control of your schedule and make time to see friends, bake cookies, or read the latest teen dystopian novel you’ve been hiding under your bed. It’s all about balance and giving yourself permission to relax.
I’m lucky, and get minimal homework from my AP teachers. I have a weekly packet on a chapter of our textbooks that are due Sunday night at midnight, so I usually try to do some reading/note taking during the week, but the majority of it is on the weekend. My AP Lit teacher doesn’t officially collect and grade assignments until the end of the marking period, so I work on that stuff a little at a time.
For the rest of the homework, I have 2 study halls (one everyday and one every other day) and I do as much as possible during those as I can so I can have some down time when I don’t have anything to do.
If you guys didn’t have AP classes in lower grades, what did you do then? I’m not sure if non-AP classes are just blatantly easy, or my school is that bad, because I have all A’s yet I barely study. (taking APs next year)
When I get home, I make myself a cup of tea (or coffee) and go straight to my room to do homework. Most nights I’m done a little after 5, so if I don’t have dance I’ll chill with my mom while she makes dinner and spend the rest of the night relaxing. Other nights I’ll go to dance, then shower and chill in my bedroom. I’m usually asleep between 10 and 11
I get home at around 8 (at the earliest), so I try to get most work done at school. I find that I have toooo many distractions at home, so I do all the busy work at school, and do the don’t-really-need-to-finish-this-until-next-week work at home because there isn’t as much stress to finish it that day!
I watch youtubes videos and tv shows for several hours honestly. Then I start my homework around 8 PM or really late if my procrastination gets too bad. If I have track and field, then I have practice after school instead of watching youtube. Occasionally, I go to the school library where I can concentration on my work and listen to classical music on the computers there.
(I’m in 6 classes, 3 are APs and 2 are honors. I sleep around midnight to 2 AM usually. I want to start working hard and sleeping earlier though.)
I enter my house. Its 3 PM. I should probably be at some club, but I’m not.
“It’s fine,” I tell myself, “I’ll just be more active next year.”
I’ve been saying that for that past three years.
I walk into the kitchen. A college brochure is on the table, advertising a school I that I would never get into. I have accepted that. It doesn’t hurt anymore.
I drop my backpack onto the ground, and slouch into a chair. My laptop is front of me. I check a few websites. It is not long until I decide to go on College Confidential.
Oh, look. Everyone got their PSAT scores. Everyone got a higher score than me. That’s nice. I don’t care. I am beyond caring.
There is reading to be done for AP Lang, notes to take for APUSH. Maybe I should get started, I think.
I open my backpack and begin my homework.
Haha, just kidding. I go on my laptop until bed, go to sleep, and start the cycle again.
