AP Studio Art worth it?

Hi, I have a small question.

When I began the year, I was planning on submitting a portfolio for AP Studio Art. However, the art program at our school seems to be very weak. We do not have a separate AP level class, and instead I am doing it by myself in a lower level art class. Half way through the year, I have nowhere near enough projects completed.

On my initial transcript that was sent to colleges, it was only listed as "Art 4". I was considering making a correction that it was actually "AP Art" with my mid year report, and then finishing my portfolio and sending it in.

Alternatively, I could leave it saying "Art 4". There are some other seniors who are part of an independent study art 4 class, which I would become part of. I would still complete projects, just not have to rush to complete 24 pieces.

I am in three other AP classes, and art is not my prospective major. Would it help my admissions chances at top schools to suck it up and finish as an AP class, or would I be wasting my time?

If you were planning to major in art then I would suggest you take the most challenging art classes you can, including AP. Since you don’t plan on majoring in art and you already have 3 AP classes, I would suggest you leave the class as Art4.

I agree with SnowflakeVT. I am in AP Studio Art with only one other AP class (AP Vergil), and let me tell you, art is my LIFE. We have so much work to do. Considering that you’re already taking 3 other AP’s, I really recommend that you don’t take AP. It is possibly the most time consuming class you could ever take in high school, maybe besides e.g. AP Lit, and if you don’t really love doing art, it will make you hate it.

Yes, as long as you get a 4 or above on the test.

Unless you’re good at drawing, then you shouldn’t take it. It may seem good to college admissions because they might think that you’re a well-rounded student. But if you can’t get a 4, then there would be no point. I recommend you to go to the AP site and take a look at some of the AP Studio artworks that were submitted. And I’m not sure how academically challenging your school is, but you should take more AP classes if you think you can handle it. Maybe it’s because my school is academically challenging and ranked 8th among the public schools, but a lot of juniors at my school take at least 4 AP classes and most of them take 5. Of course it depends on what college you want to go to, but I really recommend to take a lot of challenging classes. I wish the best of luck to you.
