AP Tests on CommonApp- Necessary to Follow Through?

I put on my common app that I would take 3 APs, all of them self-study. However, in order to fix something in my schedule I now have about 9 classes and I doubt I'll be able to properly prepare for them. Most of my classes are concurrent enrollment for college credit so I could care less about the AP credit. Will it affect my admission (already accepted EDI) if I don't take them? Would I have to let the Admisssions office know if I don't take them?

SiX,

I think you are OK with not taking the AP exams, since you are not relying on them as your standardized scores to get into NYU. The only real issue here is whether or not you want to get college credit for the AP classes and be ahead of the game at NYU. If you get a 4 or 5 on the AP exams, depending on the subject, you may get credits that mean that you can take lighter loads, waive out of some required courses, graduate early, etc.

My son received 24 credits by taking a number of AP exams. He chose not to take the AP Calculus BC exam since he already took the AP Calculus AB exam and got some math/ quantitative reasoning credit that way. No one from NYU followed up on AP exams taken at the end of senior year.

So, I am fairly sure it is now your call. You take them only if you think you will do well enough (a score of 4 or 5) to get NYU college credit (not all AP exams give you credit; for instance, AP English Literature score of 4 or 5 will give you English credit but not AP English Language score).

By the way, it sounds like you do not care for the credit, so the most important thing is to make sure you do OK in your classes grade-wise until H.S. graduation (do not start failing classes because of senioritis).

Thank you, that’s definitely a load off my mind!
So do I have to notify them at all?

No. My son did not notify NYU that he did not take a couple of AP exams at the end. No problems experienced by him. He just claimed fewer AP credits for NYU credit. Probably could have gotten 32 AP credits for NYU, but he chose not to take AP exams for two of the AP classes, so he ended up with 24 credits credited by NYU.
